August 2017 - EASTERN OREGON PARENT - 7 Tips and trivia about the solar eclipse on Aug. 21 In case you hadn’t heard by now, Oregon will be the first state in the lower U.S. to see the total solar eclipse coming on Monday, Aug. 21. It will be visible across the country. In Eastern Oregon, the moon’s shadow will be moving across the land at more than 2,000 mph. The path of totality runs slightly south of Umatilla County, but we should still get a spectacular view. We asked meteorologist John Peck, at the Pendleton office of the National Weather Service, if he could answer a few questions about this rare astronomical event. In Pendleton, how long will the entire solar eclipse last, from the time the moon first creeps across the face of the sun? More than two hours, from 9:09 to 11:45 a.m. How dark will it get? In Pendleton we will have about 98 percent coverage. It will be dark- ened, but not dark — about like dusk. Will the stars be visible during the total eclipse? Probably not, it will still be too light, but you may be able to see a few bright stars. What’s the likelihood of cloudy skies? Historically, there’s about a 10 to 15 percent chance of overcast skies. I created a YouTube video that shows weather images for Eclipse Day go- ing back to 1979. You’ll find a link at www.weather.gov/pdt/eclipse. Will it be visible from space, like on the International Space Station? They will see a dark spot. Our weather satellites will see it, too. Even in the best location, near John Day, the total eclipse will only last about two minutes, starting at 10:22 a.m. Be sure to wear special eclipse glasses (not sunglasses) when watching the event and leave them on except during the short time the moon is directly in front of the sun. If you are driving south to see the total eclipse expect a lot of traffic and add plenty of extra time. There are many websites where you and your family can learn more about the eclipse.
