Page 6A RECORDS East Oregonian Saturday, July 29, 2017 BRIEFLY DEATH NOTICES Hermiston man accused of rape faces more charges Frank J. ‘Harkie’ Harkenrider A man accused of raping a girl during a party in February in Walla Walla County now faces an additional criminal charge. Gavin D. Woods, 19, pleaded not guilty Thursday in Superior Court to the charge of tampering with a witness, in addition to initial charges of first-degree rape, and second- and fourth-de- gree assault. Trial is set for Oct. 11 and 12. Woods is suspected of sending a message to an acquaintance May 4 asking the person to talk to the alleged victim on his behalf, but not to let her know he was asking, according to a Walla Walla Sheriff’s Office report filed in court this month. Woods allegedly raped the 17-year-old girl early on the morning of Feb. 26 when she was at a bonfire party with friends at a residence on Mill Creek Road. She told officials he put his hand around her neck in a bathroom and forced her to undress, then told her to run to a bedroom where he had sexual intercourse with her, according to the sheriff’s office. She said he slapped her across the face when she repeatedly told him to stop. She also suffered apparent bite marks, the report says. She ran out of the bedroom, she told officials, and later was examined at Providence St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla. Woods was arrested in Hermiston March 2 on a Walla Walla County warrant. He was transferred to the Walla Walla County Jail the following week, but later was released with conditions pending the outcome of his case. — Walla-Walla Union Bulletin Woman sues after husband’s death in Portland jail PORTLAND (AP) — The widow of a man who died in a Portland jail has filed a lawsuit that says her husband was denied appropriate medical care. William Coupchiak called 911 on Dec. 31, 2015, saying he was suicidal and had taken too many drugs. He was arrested on a probation violation and died at the jail nearly 15 hours later. The lawsuit contends paramedics didn’t examine the 28-year-old, and the jail didn’t provide necessary medical treatment. The suit seeks unspecified damages from American Medical Response, the Portland Police Bureau and the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office. Attorney George McCoy filed the lawsuit on behalf of the widow. He tells The Oregonian/ OregonLive that Coupchiak died from a drug overdose, and it’s another example of police failing to adequately handle the mentally ill. Attorneys for Portland and Multnomah County declined comment. Hermiston Dec. 25, 1926 - July 24, 2017 Frank J. “Harkie” Harkenrider, 90, of Hermiston died Monday, July 24, 2017, in Hermiston.
