MEET THE UMATIILA COUNTY FAIR COURT I t’s not just showing up and looking pretty. The Umatilla County Fair Court has a longstanding tradition of volunteering across the coun- ty and beyond, attending so many events in the weeks be- fore the fair they often lose count. “They do everything,” said Alice Newman, who serves as the court chaperone. “We like to be a working court.” During fair week, the girls will get up as early as 5 a.m. and help out wherever needed; often awarding ribbons, intro- ducing entertainers, greeting day campers and giving radio interviews. Along the way, they grow into confident young women, learning how to present them- selves in public and serve their communities, Newman said. Karolyn Jones, 17, Pendleton Karolyn is the daughter of Jim and Shelly Jones and has three older siblings: sisters Kathryn and Kaitlyn and brother Cody. Karolyn will be a senior at Pendleton High School. She participates in FFA, works as a Starbucks barista and enjoys hunting, camping and fishing with her family. She hopes to attend the University of Wash- ington School of Medicine to become a cardiothoracic surgeon. She’s most looking forward to seeing the new grounds. It’s a big honor to be a member of the first court at the new location, she said. Kira Krumbah-Kuhar, 16, Milton-Freewater Kira is the daughter of Sherri Krumbah and Kevin Kuhar and has two older siblings: broth- er Kristofer and sister Catie, who served on the 2015 fair court. Kira will be a junior at McLoughlin High School. She is a varsity cheerleader, honor roll student and FFA member. She hopes to continue her education after high school, exploring her interests in music, cosmetol- ogy and agriculture. The princess’s past involvements with the fair include serving on the 2016 fair court and showing hogs through 4-H and FFA. She has received numerous awards for her FFA work, including the Star Greenhand FFA Award, 1st Place District Creed Speaking, 1st Place Greenhand FFA Tractor Driving, Outstanding Beginning Vice President, Reserve Grand Champion Goat Showman and 2nd Place Overall Alternate Ag Sales. She’s most looking forward to seeing the new swine barn at this year’s fair. JaNessa Prewitt, 18, Hermiston JaNessa is the daughter of Cyndi and Jeremy Prewitt and has two older siblings: sister Skyler and brother Ayden. JaNessa recently graduated from Hermiston High School, where she participated in choir. Out- side of school, she enjoys modeling, working with animals and spending time with family. She plans to Nothing attend Blue Mountain Community College to study criminal justice. The princess, who also served on the 2016 court, has twice shown her photography at the fair. This year, she’s most looking forward to the concerts. JaNessa, who sings in her spare time, can’t wait to hear Tracy Lawrence’s classic vocal style.
