Symphony announces 2017-18 season
Season begins Nov. 5
East Oregonian
The
Oregon
East
Symphony
recently
announced its lineup for the
2017-18 concert season.
Conductor Beau Benson
and the symphony program-
ming committee will present
material
ranging
from
major symphonies from
the classical music canon,
tone poems, chorale works,
chamber performances and a
theatrical ballet.
The
Oregon
East
Symphony will kick off its
season Sunday, Nov. 5 with
“Location, Location, Loca-
tion!” Each piece selected
for the concert is based on a
particular location; Robert
Schumann’s
“Symphony
No. 3 ‘Rhenish’” from the
Rhineland of Germany,
Alberto Ginastera’s “Dances
From Estancia,” the Pampas
region of Argentina, and
Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s
“Capriccio Espagnol” for
Spain.
The Sunday, Dec. 10
Holiday Music Festival will
feature both the Oregon
East Symphony and Chorale
under the direction of chorale
conductor Steve Muller.
They will perform a cycle

of Christmas carols by John
Rutter. The concert also will
feature performances by
additional community vocal
performers, including the
Pendleton Men’s Chorus.
The Winter Chamber
Music festival will return
Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018, with
a variety of small ensembles.
They will perform chamber
music. The event is paired
with wine and hearty hors
d’oeuvres.
On Saturday, March 10,
2018, the symphony will
perform the theatrical Stra-
vinsky ballet “A Soldier’s
Tale” at the Bob Clapp Theatre
at Blue Mountain Commu-
nity College, the Faustian tale
of a soldier exchanging his
soul for a book of knowledge.
It features a small chamber
ensemble, narrator and
dancer for select scenes. The
concert also will include the
bassoon feature “Dead Elvis”
by Michael Daugherty.
The season finale is
Saturday, April 21, 2018,
and will feature guest soloist
Augusta Schubert on Felix
Mendelssohn’s
“Violin
Concerto.” Also featured on
the program will be Beetho-
ven’s “Symphony No. 2”
and the overture to Mozart’s
“Don Giovanni.”

may be purchased at the
symphony office, 345 S.W.

PENDLETON —
Youths ages 7-18 can
still sign up for the 2017
Summer Youth Theatre
Camp offered by College
Community Theatre
(CCT) at Blue Mountain
Community College’s Bob
Clapp Theatre.
CCT is the grateful
recipient of three grants
for the camp. The Umatilla
County Cultural Coalition
has, once again, provided
$2,000 in funding. Blue
Mountain Community
Foundation has provided
$1,300, and Pendleton
on Wheels granted $500.
These grants, and the
in-kind support of BMCC,
allow the cost of camp to
remain at only $75 for a
week of activities under
the direction of theatre
professionals from the
Portland area. CCT has
sponsored the camp for
more than 20 years.
Camp runs daily from
9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. July
17-21, with theatre games,
specialty workshops, and
rehearsals for the public
performance at 7:00 p.m.
on Saturday, July 22. This
performance is open to the
public and free of charge,
