BRIEFLY Firefighters contain fire west of Umatilla UMATILLA — Umatilla Rural Fire Protection District stifled a blaze at Southshore Drive, west of Umatilla, around 7:30 p.m. Monday. The cause of the fire is unknown, but no one was injured and no structures were damaged. When fire crews arrived, the fire was burning in about two acres of tall, dry grass. The fire was spreading quickly due to high winds, and firefighters were aided by Umatilla County Fire District, Irrigon Rural Fire Protection District, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife. Winds were at 10 to 15 mph, which contributed to the spread of the fire, but crews were able to keep it away from structures and pinched off the fire at the river. The fire was contained around 8:15 p.m., and crews were mopping up until about 3 a.m. Tuesday. Umatilla Rural Fire and Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will monitor the area for the next several days. Umatilla student to national space competition UMATILLA — A Umatilla High School student will travel to Florida this month to participate in the finals of the International Space Settlement Design Competition. Anthony Ibarra, who is an incoming junior, will represent the Umatilla High School robotics program at the event. Ibarra will compete as part of a team in an industry simulation game set on Venus, designed to emulate the experience of working on an aerospace industry proposal team. The teams will each have managers from the industry to help them prepare for the competition before they present to a panel of judges. According to a press release, the competitions require participants to “integrate their knowledge of and utilize skills in space science, physics, math, chemistry, environmental science, biology, computer science, writing, speaking, art and common sense.” In a press release from the Umatilla School District, Ibarra said he is a little nervous, but looks forward to the competition. “I have liked participating in the Umatilla Robotics Program because I like working with my hands and hope to become an engineer,” Ibarra said. The Umatilla School District was able to send one student to the competition through a partnership with the JPL Museum in Stayton, Oregon, as well as through the assistance of Dr. Norman Chaffee. The museum was established in 2015, and centers on the career of Joseph Loftus, a 47-year employee of NASA. The competition is sponsored by Aerospace Education Competitions and the National Space Society. ——— Briefs are compiled from staff and wire reports, and press releases.
