HONORS Pendleton High School graduate Jonathan Wolotira, in addition to receiving many scholarships, has also been selected as a 2017 inductee to the Oregon Music Hall of Fame. “This is a significant honor, and a rare one for our side of the state,” said Emily Callender of the PHS music program. “The $2,500 scholarship is exciting, but the recognition that comes with this selection is even more so.” Wolotira took up the guitar at age 8, largely due to the influence of San Diego rock band Switch- foot. He participated during high school as a singer, percussionist and guitarist in three choir and four band ensembles, and is a current member of the Oregon East Symphony, Pendleton Men’s Chorus and College Community Theatre. The OMHOF scholarship will help Wolotira start his college career at Blue Mountain Community College, where he intends to participate in musical theater productions. He will complete his degree at Whit- worth College in biophysics and pre-medicine with a minor in music ministry. Wolotira will participate in a concert featuring 2017 OMHOF inductees Tuesday, July 11 from 5-7 p.m. at the Tony Starlight Dinner Club, 1125 S.E. Madison, Suite 103G, in Portland. Pendleton Kiwanis award scholarships The Kiwanis Club of Pendleton recently awarded four $1,000 scholarships to area students who were active members of their schools, churches, and in their respective communi- ties: Avery Madril, Courtney Canfield and Amy Swenson, graduates of Pendleton High School, and Trevor Riedman, a graduate of Pilot Rock High School. Collectively, the four scholarship recip- ients’ impressive high school resumes included: participation and leadership roles in the performing arts (choral and instrumental music and theater groups,) athletic teams, dance team, band and orchestra, student government, church youth groups, and service organi- zations (including National Honor Society, Key Club, ASTRA, and the Commu- nicare Club.) In addition, this group of scholarship recipients includes a student body president, an Eagle Scout, an outdoor school counselor and a Sister City Exchange student, to name a few of their accomplish- ments beyond each of their exemplary academic performances and other successes at Pendleton High School or Pilot Rock High School. The local Kiwanis Club is proud to award these local teenagers support for their college educations, whose aspi- rations include careers in business administration, political science, social work, and medicine, and who currently plan to attend either the University of Oregon, the University of Portland, Pacific Univer- sity, or Linfield College. Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to serving children in their communities, and awarding scholarships to local high school graduates is an annual event for the Kiwanis Club of Pendleton. )633:3&5$1301&35:5"94&550&91*3& H.
