SPORTS Friday, July 7, 2017 East Oregonian Page 3B NBA Kelly Olynyk on the move, agrees to sign with Miami By TIM REYNOLDS Associated Press MIAMI — Kelly Olynyk has agreed to sign with the Miami Heat. Agent Greg Lawrence confirmed the decision to The Associated Press on Thursday night. ESPN reported it would be a four-year deal worth in excess of $50 million. The deal has not been signed, though could be as early as Friday. A 7-foot center with 3-point range, Olynyk spent his first four NBA seasons with the Boston Celtics and played mostly as a reserve. He averaged 9.5 points in 278 regular-season games shot a career-best 51 percent last season. Olynyk’s deal means that for the Heat to complete the Serbia’s No- vak Djokovic returns the ball to Czech Republic’s Adam Pav- lasek during their Men’s Singles Match on day four at the Wimble- don Tennis Champi- onships in London Thursday, July 6, 2017. AP Photo/Tim Ireland WIMBLEDON: Continued from 1B while trailing 3-0. Darcis is the eighth man to retire during a match this week. The Belgian took a medical timeout after 18 minutes of play and was unable to continue. One of the favorites in the women’s tournament, third- seeded Karolina Pliskova, lost on Centre Court. Magda- lena Rybarikova beat Plis- kova 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 to reach the third round for the second time in 10 appearances. Pliskova entered the tour- nament with a chance to take over the No. 1 ranking. “My expectations were a little bit different than to make one round here,” Plis- kova said. “That’s tennis, you know. Still, you still can play well and you don’t have to win. That’s my case today.” Top-seeded Angelique Kerber also advanced to the third round, along with seventh-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova, ninth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska, 14th-seeded Garbine Mugu- ruza and 24th-seeded CoCo Vandeweghe. Also, American wild-card entry Bethanie Mattek-Sands injured her right knee during a point and retired from her second-round match. Moving up toward the net in the opening game of the third set against Sorana Cirstea of Romania, Mattek-Sands slipped and fell. She immedi- ately clutched her right knee. She could be heard screaming in pain and sobbing. Two players previously eliminated from the tourna- ment were handed fines on Thursday. Bernard Tomic of Australia was fined $15,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct two days after he spoke about feeling “a little bit bored out there” during his match. Daniil Medvedev of Russia, who threw a handful coins in the direction of the chair umpire after a second- round loss on Wednesday, was given three fines totaling $14,500. re-signings of James Johnson and Wayne Ellington — who are both still wanted by Miami — a deal will have to be swung to get rid of some salary and create more cap space. Josh McRoberts, who has played in only 81 games during his three injury-plagued seasons in Miami, would be the most likely candidate for a trade. McRoberts is due to make just over $6 million next season. The Heat value the corner 3-pointer, as many teams have in this NBA, and Olynyk could be a huge addition on that front. According to the NBA’s stat-tracking page, Olynyk was 18 for 32 this past season on corner 3-pointers — and was also a strong finisher at the rim, connecting on 73 percent of his tries in the restricted area. BASEBALL: Pepsi (7-9) scored a pair in the first inning when Tyler Browning scored from third base on an error by the Mount Vernon catcher and then Caden Primus stole home. After a few quiet innings, Pepsi added on and took control of the game in the fourth by putting up a five spot on Mount Vernon. Browning scored his second run of the game on a steal of home and Kyle Field followed suit, and then Nat Hunsaker doubled to center to bring home Sweek for a 5-0 Continued from 1B Roberts and Tanner Sweek combined for six innings of one-hit shutout baseball as their Pepsi Diamondjaxx started the Chuck Brown Tournament with an 8-0 victory over Mount Vernon on Thursday night. Roberts started the game and lasted three innings giving up just one hit and two walks to go with five strikeouts. Sweek finished the game with three perfect innings with four strikeouts. lead. Later in the inning, Curtis Simons scored on a passed ball and then Greysen Clark scored on a sacrifice fly from Jonathan Begay to make it 7-0. The eighth run came in the bottom of the sixth when Tucker Zander drew a bases loaded walk to bring home Roberts. Begay, Primus and Hunsaker each had a team- high two hits, with Hunsaker tallying a pair of doubles. As a team, Pepsi worked 12 walks, struck out just once, and produced nine hits. MARINERS: is scheduled to throw live batting practice in Arizona on Saturday, Melvin said. ... RHP Kendall Graveman (strained right shoulder) was scheduled to throw two 20-pitch bullpen sessions in Arizona on Thursday. ... INF Chad Pinder (strained left hamstring) “is hitting in the cage and running much better now, so that’s a step forward,” Melvin said. Mariners: DH Nelson Cruz has been hampered by a sore right knee. Cruz was thrown out at second trying for a double on a drive off the wall in left- center in Wednesday’s 9-6 loss to Kansas City. “He’s Continued from 1B was placed on the 10-day DL (right thumb blister). Semien missed 74 games. “You look at our lineup and all of a sudden it looks like it’s got a little more length and some more oomph in it,” manager Bob Melvin said. “So, it’s good to get him back. Obviously, we’ve missed him.” Cotton is 5-8 with a 5.17 ERA in 14 starts. RHP Andrew Triggs was transferred from the 10-day DL to the 60-day DL (strained left hip). TRAINER’S ROOM Athletics: RHP Ryan Dull (strained right knee) managing it best he can,” manager Scott Servais said. “I appreciate him doing everything he can to get on the field. We know that’s it a deficiency when he’s on the bases, but we’re taking the good over the bad right now and the good is him in the batters’ box.” UP NEXT Athletics: Left-hander Sean Manaea (7-4, 3.75 ERA) is 6-1 with a 2.84 ERA over his last nine starts. Mariners: Left-hander James Paxton (6-3, 3.27) still is looking for the early season form displayed before spending most of May on the disabled list.
