This year’s event is Friday through Sunday at Athena City Park. Scots to take over Athena East Oregonian A gathering of friends, music, sharing and friendly Scottish athletic competition is featured during this week- end’s Athena Caledonian Games. Proclaiming “Let the Games begin!,” the official opening of the Games by Chieftains of the Day Paula Babb and John Shafer will take place during the Cale- donian dinner. A fundraiser for the event, the gathering is Friday from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Athena City Park. The candle lighting ceremony at 7:30 p.m. serves as an informal blessing of clan, family and the festival. Music will fill the air at the park. Among the high- lights are Guess When, a Boise-based group. A Celtic folk rock band, Guess When incorporates its unique sound by putting a Celtic spin on contemporary cover songs. Featuring pipes and bodhran, guitars, fiddles or vocals, Guess When offers a varied program that will transport audiences to auld Scotland, said Sue Friese of Caledonian Games. Their music is energetic, she said, and their pace is dedicated to honest Celtic spirit but informal and fun. The group performs Friday during the event fundraiser, as well as Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Also, while hanging around the park Saturday, you won’t want to miss Trio of One. Michael Mullen ties in his own accompaniment with live-looped jigs and reels. A one-man band, Trio of One rocks acoustic folk with a Celtic twist, performing at 11:15 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. In the adjacent athletic fields, flying objects will fill the air — including hammers, weights, hay bales, and the well-known caber — during the Scottish Athletic Compe- tition. The registrations are open Saturday at 11 a.m. and the competition starts at noon. Beginners, masters and professionals — kilts not required — compete all afternoon. The Scottish-American Athletic Association monitors and sanctions the competition, which is historically based on techniques of strength required to farm the rough lands of Scotland. Athena resident Alan Wernsing is chairman of the athletic competition. In addition to music and sport, Friese said the Athena Caledonian Games are known for the storytelling of Mary Finney, Celtic harp performances by Janet Naylor, vendors, kids’ games, displays and clan tents, which are forming a Clan Village in Athena City Park. The day’s activities will crescendo with Saturday evening’s Caledonian Tattoo. An outdoor concert, it features marching pipe bands, who will join together for a fantastic finale with the Blue Mountains as a backdrop Sunday’s schedule features a church service, a Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan at 9:30 a.m., followed by Caledonian Coffee Hour. Caledonian, Friese said, has a new look with banners provided by a grant from the Wildhorse Foundation that proclaim “Hoot, mon! Upcoming trips include this Friday to Get Air Tri-Cities, which costs $23. The Friday, July 14 activity is Chuck E. Cheese and Carousel of Dreams. The $21 fee includes pizza and game tokens. Also, a pair of outdoor trips, which are $12 each, are featured July 21 to Jubilee Lake and July 28 to Harris Park. Brady Goss performs in Baker City music series BAKER CITY — With lightning-fast fingers, Brady Goss will tear up the keyboards during a performance at the Powder River Music Review. The event is Sunday, July 9 from 4-6 p.m. in the Powder River Pavilion at Geiser-Pollman Park, 1723 Madison St., Baker City. Growing up in Wallowa County with a fascination with Jerry Lee Lewis, Goss has gone on to become a regional favorite throughout the Pacific Northwest. Get ready to tap your toes to the rock and roll sounds of the ’50s and ’60s, plus some original tunes of his own. The Powder River Music Review features live performers each Sunday through Aug. 27. In case of inclement weather, the shows will be held at the Baker County Fairgrounds, 2600 East St., Baker City. With no set admission fee, people are encouraged to make a $5 donation, which includes a raffle ticket for a gift basket. The Powder River Music Review also is sponsoring live entertainment events during Miner’s Jubilee (July 14-16) and during the weekend leading up to the Aug. 21 total solar eclipse. Recital benefits strings camp PENDLETON — A recital will raise money for the Oregon East Symphony’s Summer Strings Music Camp. Featuring Oregon East Symphony concertmaster Lisa Robertson and pianist James Cook, the performance is Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Pendleton First Presbyterian Church, 201 S.W. Dorion Ave., Pendleton. Admission is free, but a $10 donation is suggested. The two friends and veteran musicians will perform Mozart’s “Sonata in Eb Major, K. 481” and “Sonata in A Major, K. 526” and Beethoven’s “Sonata in G Major, Op. 96.” Registrations are still open for the music camp. The week-long day camp for string players of all ages is July 31 through Aug. 4. The cost is $100. Registrations received by Thursday, July 13 will receive a $20 discount.
