But on Friday afternoon, the Rockets fi nally met their match. The No. 5 seed North Douglas Warriors displayed clutch defense and timely hitting as they upset the No. 2 Rockets 3-1 to capture the fi rst softball title in school history at the OSU Softball Complex. Even as Pilot Rock’s reign as two-time defending cham- pion came to an end with the loss, coach Darin Fitzpatrick told his team after the game to keep their heads held high. “I told all of them how proud I am of them,” he said by phone after the game. “There are 38 other teams in our division that would have loved to be where we are. They’ve made themselves proud and they’ve made their town proud. We’ve had a great run and still have a lot coming back next season.” The Rockets (25-6) offense ran into North Douglas’ (22-4) standout freshman pitcher Nicki Derrick, as the right-hander allowed just four hits and two walks with 10 strikeouts. PETERSON Associated Press CORVALLIS — Jake Thompson allowed one run on four hits while striking out 10 over 7 2/3 innings and Oregon State defeated Holy Cross 8-2 in the Corvallis Regional on Friday night. Oregon State, the No. 1 national seed, goes on to face Yale on Saturday night in the double-elimination tournament. The Bulldogs, the regional’s No. 3 seed, beat second-seeded Nebraska 5-1 in the early game. Trevor Larnach hit a run-scoring double before Michael Gretler’s solo home run in the seventh put the Beavers up 7-1. Preston Jones added an RBI double in the eighth. Kellen McCormick drove in a run with a single in the ninth for the Crusaders. Oregon State’s four losses in the regular season were the fewest since Texas was 53-4 going into the tournament in 1982. The Beavers went 27-3 in Pac-12 play for the league title, surpassing Arizona State’s record of 26 league wins set in 1981. (AP) — Pittsburgh center Nick Bonino was wearing a walking boot on his left foot and using crutches Friday, raising the possibility that he will not play in Nashville in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final. Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said the veteran has a lower-body injury and will be a game-time decision against the Predators on Saturday night. Team captain Sidney Crosby said everybody’s banged up at this time of year on Bonino both teams. Bonino plays on Pittsburgh’s fourth line, but the veteran is a key penalty killer. Seattle is the only team to have hosted the polarizing player, although there appears to be no intent to sign him. Ex-Penn State administrators get jail time in Sandusky case HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Three ex-Penn State offi cials are getting jail time for failing to report now-convicted sexual predator Jerry Sandusky to authorities. Former Penn State President Graham Spanier and former vice president Gary Schultz will have to spend two months in jail. Former athletic director Tim Curley will spend three months in jail. The rest of their sentences will be served in house arrest. A graduate coaching assistant told adminis- trators that he saw Sandusky molesting a boy in a football team shower in 2001. But Spanier, Curley and Schultz didn’t report him to child welfare authorities or police. Sandusky wasn’t arrested until a tip in 2011 led investigators to interview the shower witness. Sandusky is now serving a 30- to-60-year sentence for abusing 10 boys, but is appealing. THIS DATE IN SPORTS 1927 — The United States wins the fi rst Ryder Cup golf tournament by beating Britain 9½-2½. 1987 — Danny Harris defeats Edwin Moses with a 47.56 mark in the 400 hurdles at a meet in Madrid, Spain, ending the longest winning streak in track and fi eld history. Moses, who fi nishes .13 seconds behind Harris, had won 122 consecutive races dating to Aug. 26, 1977. 2009 — Randy Johnson earns his 300th win, becoming the 24th major league pitcher to reach the milestone by leading San Francisco to a 5-1 victory over the Washington Nationals.
