(AP) — A Virginia woman accused of having a fake explosive device that set off a bomb scare in a grocery store parking lot says the object was a novelty alarm clock she bought at a garage sale. Daphne Page was arrested Friday after someone spotted the device in the back seat of her car in Short Pump. Authorities used a robot to remove the object from the vehicle. Page was charged with the manufacture, possession or use of explosives. The statute that includes the manufacture and possession of hoax devices. The 52-year-old told The Richmond-Times Dispatch that the object was a clock designed to look like a bundle of dynamite that she bought for $1. As the tractor and tank trailer started to roll it started to break up, leaving a set of wheels behind. The tank broke from the tractor and rolled off in another direction. Brady stayed with the tractor which finally came to a stop near the underpass to Dodd’s Pond. The crash caused the tank- trailer to rupture, spilling all the oil. 25 Years Ago From the East Oregonian May 27-28, 1992 A parade Saturday will honor Pendleton High School’s 100th graduating class. Beth Delamarter expects up to 50 separate elements in the centennial parade, including the oldest graduate — Kathreen Kirk- patrick Purchase, 101, from 1910. Francis Baily and Velma Murphy York from the Class of 1923 will participate, along with several graduates representing classes from each decade from the 1930s to ’60s. The 1992 graduating seniors will appear, along with the Class of 2000 (fourth graders). Seniors elect a group of “Guiding Lights,” who will be honored during the parade. The group includes influential teachers, counselors, administrators and other school staffers through the years. 6:30 AFTERNOON KVEW KATU (31) PBS 100 Years Ago From the East Oregonian May 27-28, 1917 Pendleton has subscribed for $400,000 worth of Liberty Bonds, the record being higher than that of any other town in the state outside of Portland and probably better than that of any town in the west of Pendleton’s size. The significance of Pendleton’s action may be seen when it is known that Oregon’s appor- tionment of the two billion dollar bond issue is given at but six millions. Pendleton with approximately one per cent of the state’s population has taken almost seven per cent of Oregon’s share of bonds. 50 Years Ago From the East Oregonian May 27-28, 1967 A Pendleton tank truck driver, Lane Brady, escaped with only cuts and bruises when his fully loaded truck went off the road at the inter- section of Highway 395 near Dodd’s Pond Friday night. The huge Phillips 66 truck, owned by Bonbright Oil Company and loaded with 6,200 gallons of diesel fuel, went off the highway when Brady attempted to make the turn onto Highway 395 enroute to Pendleton from Pasco, Wash. In 1883, Moorhouse was appointed by President Harrison as Indian agent for the Umatilla Indian reservation, a post he kept for many years, and he made many friends amongst the tribes during his time representing them. During his later years he also engaged in real estate, insurance and law. He was deputy clerk of the Oregon Supreme Court for 25 years and also served as treasurer of the city of Pendleton. But perhaps he was most famous for his amateur photography. He was best known for his photos of the Cayuse Twins, taken in 1898, but his collection of negatives featuring the native peoples of the West was the largest in the United States, and his photos were used to illustrate scores of Oregon histories. He also had a large collection of native memorabilia, and he was one of the foremost historians of Oregon and Indian lore of his time. Moorhouse’s services were attended by scores of people from all over Oregon. He is buried at Olney Cemetery in Pendleton. ■ Renee Struthers is the Community Records Editor for the East Oregonian. See the complete collection of Out of the Vault columns at eovault.blogspot.com NIGHT OWL STATION PBS ABC NBC CBS FOX O ne of Pendleton’s most famous and beloved residents, Major Lee Moorhouse, died of an embolism on June 1, 1926, at the age of 76. Moorhouse was born in Iowa in 1850 and came to Oregon with his family in the Morgan train of pioneers on the Oregon Trail. The family settled first near Pendleton in 1861, and then near Walla Walla where Moorhouse lived until the age of 14. He then set out to work in the mines in Idaho and British Columbia where, despite his young age, he was quite successful. Later he returned to the Walla Walla area, where he studied civil engineering with the Oregon & California Railroad. He was appointed county surveyor in Pendleton soon after finishing his studies. He also went into business with merchant Lot Livermore in Pendleton and John Foster in Umatilla. Moorehouse was appointed assistant adjutant general of the Oregon state militia in 1878 during the Bannock War, with the rank of major, and held that post for four years while serving as secretary to Governor Stephen Chadwick.
