E 3 0 MARIST CATHOLIC 9, HERMISTON 1 — At Eugene, the No. 15 seed Hermiston Bulldogs’ season came to an end as the No. 2 seed Marist Catholic Spartans beat them 9-1 in the first round playoff game on Wednesday. Marist Catholic (24-3) pitcher Baylee Eaton had a perfect game going through 5 1/3 innings until Hermiston’s (10-16) Amanda Barron drew a walk. Next up, Kalei Smith ended the no-hit bid as well as she smacked an RBI double to score Barron for Hermiston’s only run of the game. Oregon Ducks signee Lauren Burke had a monster game for Marist Catholic as she went 3 for 4 with a home run and a double. Burke BLANCHET CATH- OLIC 2, WESTON- MCEWEN 1 — At Athena, a pop-up with the tying run on third was how the Weston- McEwen TigerScots’ season ended with a first-round loss in the 3A OSAA softball state playoffs on Wednesday. TigerScots coach Jeff Griggs said it was a game of close calls for Weston- McEwen, which also had two hard-hit balls curve into foul territory at the last second. Bailey Hillmick struck out 11 from the circle and both Blanchet Catholic’s runs were unearned. “Bailey more than did her job in the circle. We had some critical errors,” Griggs said. “We had two teams playing that were very comparable and as usual when that’s the case it’s going to come down to really small things.” Blanchet starter Savannah Barchus only gave up four hits and struck out six. Weston-McEwen’s run was also unearned, and came on a sacrifice bunt by Tyree Burke in the fifth inning to score Amie Coffman and tie it 1-1. Khari Ruiz led off the sixth with a double for Blanchet, and an error in the field allowed her to score the go-ahead run. Griggs said the team will sorely miss its three seniors next season — Hillmick, Emma Burke and Sydney Peal. “We’re going to miss those girls a lot. Not just between the lines, we’re going to miss them in the dugout and the team huddle,” he said. “They did a great job for us.” Griggs said he also wanted to give a special thanks to his assistant coaches KC Ashley and Michael Lambert, who helped him earn Special District 1 Coach of the Year honors. ——— R BCHS 000 101 0 — 2 W-M 000 010 0 — 1 W — S. H 5 4 E 1 3 RAINIER 12, IRRIGON 1 — At Rainier, pitchers Haley Schimmel and Taleah King held Irrigon to just two hits, and Jadyn Crape and Rylee O’Brien combined to drive in seven runs to lead the Rainier Columbians into the second round of the Class 3A OSAA softball state playoffs on Wednesday. Rainier jumped out to an early lead 6-0 after one inning and allowed just one Irrigon base runner in each of the first four innings. The Knights scored their run in the top of the fifth when Emma Combes came in from third on a passed ball. Karrizma Luna and Casa- ndra Fleming had Irrigon’s hits.
