Continued from 1B two spots ahead of the Tigers in second to win the team title by four points 67-63. Regis, which won the 4x400 relay in 3:31.43, was third with 61 points. Scott secured the only indi- vidual title for the TigerScots when he held off Bandon’s Josh Snyder and Zane Olive in the 800 meters with a time of 2:00.63. It was his second straight state title in the event. He had to settle for third earlier in the meet when Bandon’s Hunter Hutton out-kicked him down the stretch in the 1,500. Scott stopped the clock in 4:04.34, just .49 off Hutton’s winning time. Snyder was second. Also for Weston-McEwen, Kirk Scott was second in 2A javelin with a throw of 161-11, and was also fifth in the discus (125-1). Jacob Speed was second in the 400 in 51.07, and was third in the 200 in 23.18. The TigerScots’ 4x100 team also brought in big points with a third-place finish as Hadden Ball, Khai Robertson, Kelen McGill and Speed stopped the clock in 45.96. Pilot Rock’s Devin Hasher picked up the first state title for locals when he cleared 6-3 on his second attempt in high jump earlier in the meet. As a freshman Hasher had marked himself as an athlete to watch when he placed third at the state meet with high jump of six feet, two inches, but was unable to improve on that mark despite second- and fourth-place finishes in the last two seasons. Hasher was able to take his final leaps without pressure on Friday, though, and had already secured the title when Yoncalla’s Sean Keenan hit the bar on his final attempt at 6-2 — a height Hasher cleared on his first attempt. When Hasher nudged the bar from its perch on his first try at 6-3 it was just his second scratch of meet. The 1A ranks had to wait until near the end of the meet before Arlington junior Thomas Evans ended their title drought with a 175-feet, 4-inch throw to win javelin and break his own PR by nearly five feet. She also was third in the 100 (12.97), but was the victim of a monster day by East Linn Christian senior Mackenzie Wilson. Wilson set two new state meet records in the 100 (12.42) and 200 (25.72) and also won the 400. Pilot Rock’s Rachel Will- ingham was third in girls’ triple jump with 34-1.5 and fourth in the 300 hurdles (48.58), their girls’ 4x100 relay team was fourth (53.26), Siobhan Holman was fourth in the 100 hurdles (17.22), and the Rockets were second in team scoring through 16 events. LARGE SCHOOLS: Hermiston hurdlers reach finals Continued from 1B jump with 16-11, She’s got two more finals today in the triple jump and 4x100 relay. Senior Makayla Akers also added team points for the Hermiston girls taking seventh in javelin with 118-9. The Bulldogs are tied for seventh going into Day 2 with six points. Summit is way out front of everybody else with 50. Hermiston’s boys brought in four points with their throwers and was tied for 10th. Bulldogs senior Ismael Arenas capped his career with notable seventh-place in discus that was due to a personal-best 146-2 on his penultimate throw. He also placed eighth in shot put throwing 49-0.5, and junior Antionio Fernandez was eighth in discus (139-11). The only other placing by a local at the large school meet was Mac-Hi’s Bianca Garcia who was sixth in the 4A girls’ javelin with 117-5. Five athletes punched tickets into their finals heats, though. Hermiston senior Tyler Rohrman won his prelimi- nary heat in the 110-meter hurdles in 14.99 and heads into today’s finals as the second seed. He also quali- fied for the 300 hurdles finals with a new PR of 41.19 that was fourth on the day. Also qualifying for both hurdles finals was Bulldogs sophomore Madison Wilson. She is seeded second in the 100 (15.35) and fourth in the 300 (47.67). Two more Hermiston sophomores are finals-bound as Scout Reagan qualified sixth for the 100 finals in 12.66, and Elsa Torres ran a new PR of 1:01.18 in the 400 to take the eighth finals spot. Pendleton was one for two in preliminaries and senior Soren Wolf de Gavia made his way into the 400 finals with a PR of 50.98. Page 3B HERMISTON Bulldogs advance to state Late offense pushes Hermiston into 5A tournament Softball Hermiston Hillsboro 5 3 East Oregonian HILLSBORO — On paper, Friday’s Class 5A play-in game between Hermiston and Hillsboro seemed to give the home Spartans the advantage. Hillsboro came into the game with a record nine games above .500, while Hermiston came in seven games below .500 and were averaging just 2.9 runs over its last 12 games. But as coaches often say, none of that matters in the post- season and the Bulldogs surely showed it. Hermiston overcame an early 2-0 deficit and rallied for five runs in the sixth and seventh innings to knock off Hillsboro 5-3, punching the Bulldogs ticket to the 5A state tournament next week. “The girls fought hard, especially late in the game when it got tight,” Hermiston coach Kate Greenough said. The Bulldogs (10-16) were kept in the game early by junior pitcher Julissa Almaguer, who struck out two and walked two in seven innings while allowing eight hits and three runs. Her finest moment came in the third inning, when she hit a batter and gave up two straight singles to load the bases with only one out. However she was able to dance out of danger by inducing back-to-back infield pop flies to help the Bulldogs escape the frame unscathed. Hermiston’s offense finally broke through in the sixth inning, when Almaguer singled and Sam Atilano reached on an error. It set up a prime scoring chance for senior Ellery Jones, who knocked an RBI single and then later came around to score on an error which gave Hermiston a 3-2 lead. After Hillsboro then tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, the bottom of the Bulldogs batting order came through in the seventh. Amanda Barron hit a one-out single and then stole second base, allowing her to score on an RBI double by Kalei Smith to put Hermiston up 4-3. Sydney Stefani then gave Hermiston a huge insurance run with a RBI single later in the inning for a 5-3 lead. Almaguer shut the door in the seventh, wiping out a hit with two pop fly outs and a groundout to end the game. MLB Cabrera double lifts White Sox in 10th By DAIMON EKLUND Associated Press SEATTLE — Melky Cabrera doubled in the go-ahead run with two outs in the top of the 10th inning to lift the Chicago White Sox to a 2-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Friday night. Jose Abreu hit a solo homer in the sixth inning for the White Sox, who snapped a seven-game road losing streak and four-game overall skid. White Sox starter Jose Quintana allowed just one hit with seven strikeouts over eight innings, but left with the game tied at 1. David Robertson (3-1) pitched the final two innings, retiring all six batters, to earn the win. Mariners reliever Tony Zych (2-1) hit Kevan Smith with a pitch to lead off the 10th. Smith was replaced by pinch-runner Leury Garcia, who advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and groundout before scoring on Cabrera’s double. The only hit Quintana allowed was a second-in- ning leadoff triple to Danny Valencia, who scored on Ben Gamel’s sacrifice fly to center and gave Seattle an early 1-0 lead. In four of Quintana’s nine starts this year, the White Sox haven’t scored a single run while he was on the mound. As good as he was Friday night, for much of his outing it appeared he’d once again fall victim to a lack of offense as Chicago stayed scoreless through the first Chicago Seattle 2 1 five innings. Seattle starter Ariel Miranda had a career-high nine strikeouts in seven innings, which also tied his career long. He gave up one run on four hits, walking two. Miranda was following up an eight- strikeout game — which tied his career high at the time — in his last start Sunday at Toronto. Miranda set his new career high to end the fifth inning. A pair of singles by the White Sox put runners on first and second, the first time Chicago got a runner in scoring position against Miranda, but his strikeout of Willy Garcia ended the threat. The White Sox got their first run an inning later on Abreu’s homer, his eighth, which landed in the upper- deck left field bleachers to tie the game at 1. STREAK OVER Mariners shortstop Jean Segura went 0 for 4, ending his hitting streak at 17 games. That ties him with Mike Trout for the longest streak in the majors this season. TRAINERS ROOM The Mariners had hoped OF Mitch Haniger (strained right oblique) would start a minor league rehab stint Friday.
