A committee consisting of Lieutenant Chambers, Sergeant Steiwer and Sergeant Thompson was appointed to make the purchases and an effort will be made to get them here in time for the Decoration Day exercises. 50 Years Ago From the East Oregonian May 19, 1967 Pendleton’s 1967 clean-up campaign got a soapy sendoff this morning as downtown merchants manned brooms to scrub down the mall. It’s hoped before the campaign is over on June 10 that it will spread to every neighbor- hood in the city. The Pendleton Lions Club is in charge of the clean-up campaign this year, which officially runs from May 20 to June 10. Last year Pendleton placed second and the year before, during the first statewide clean-up campaign, Pendleton won the cup. The mall scrub-down was just the first of many such efforts around town. Monday, the local Naval Reserve unit will show how the sailors do it by washing down the city hall steps. 25 Years Ago From the East Oregonian May 19, 1992 Beef cattle ranchers in Umatilla County are putting Northeast Oregon on the map as one of the most progressive regions in the business, evidenced by an unbroken string of national beef producer awards. The Kopp Ranch near Pilot Rock is the third Umatilla County ranch in as many years to win the Beef Improvement Federation’s “Outstanding Commercial Producer” award, given to just one ranch family nationwide each year.
