SPORTS STATE TRACK: Large school meets begin today East Oregonian Page 2B Continued from 1B event, and took third at 2A with a 47-3.25. He was fifth as a freshman. Also earning bronze were Condon/Wheeler’s Justine Homer and Christine Segura in girls’ javelin and high jump, respectively. Condon/Wheeler’s girls are tied with Helix for fifth at 1A with 12 team points. Helix was led by the fourth- place finish of Sadie Wilson in high jump. A pair of fourth-place finishes have the Condon/ Wheeler boys tied for second with 15 points after Cooper Johnson cleared 5-10 in high jump and Jake Bold went for 11-6 in pole vault. Weston-McEwen’s girls BRIEFLY Pendleton athletic field getting facelift PENDLETON — Earlier this week, the Buckaroo Boosters agreed to donate $250,000 to Pendleton High School for a new scoreboard at the PHS athletic field. But on Friday, the East Oregonian learned that the $250,000 will also cover the installation of permanent lighting at the athletic field, opening up more opportunities for Pendleton athletic teams. With a refurbished track surface already on the books which will also help widen the infield grass area, pairing the lights and scoreboard with that will allow Pendleton to play home soccer and football games at the facility, school athletic director Troy Jerome said in an email. Previously, Buckaroo soccer played its home games at the BMCC field, while football would normally not have a home game for the first month of the season due to the Round-Up’s schedule. Jerome said that the project is expected to be completed in time for the fall 2017 season. Youth Track Meet Saturday PENDLETON — An all comers youth track meet will be held on Saturday at 9 a.m. at Pendleton High School. Track events will be held for ages 1-12, and all ages are welcome to compete in field events standing long jump and tennis/softball throw. There will also be family 4x100 relay open to all ages. The meet is sponsored by Pendelton Parks and Recreation. — East Oregnian are seventh in Class 2A with 10 points and fourth-place finishes by long jumper Bryce Thul (16-0) and javelin thrower Maddi Muilenburg (108-2). Heppner’s boys were fifth at 2A with 12 points and Hunter Nichols adding fourth-place points in the 3,000 (9:08.25), and Weston-McEwen had just five points but did see Jacob Speed win his 400 prelim in 51.79 and qualify third for the 200 finals in 23.42. None of the 3A teams had cracked the top 15 in points, but that will likely change today. Umatilla’s Trent Durfey was third in the 110 hurdle prelims, and won his heat in 16.24. Riverside’s David Rodriguez was third in the 300 hurdle prelims in 42.09. Irrigon’s Ana Zacarias qualified for the girls’ 100 and 200 finals, and River- side’s Racky Pindy had the fourth-best 400 time on Thursday with 1:01.92. HERMISTON — Herm- iston High senior Ebony Wilson qualified for the OSAA championships in four events and won Field Athlete of the Year honors at the Columbia River Conference championships in Hermiston. Wilson won district titles in long jump, triple jump and as part of the 4x100 relay team. She also was second in the 100-meter dash. EW: Probably just my first time going to Hayward as a freshman and just getting those nerves, and having fun participating with the track team. What is the first sport you played and how old were you? It was track and I was about five and a half. I didn’t know what I was doing at first. What are your plans for after high school? I’m planning to go to EOU, that’s one of my top colleges. I want to study sociology and psychology. I want to be a school counselor. What’s your favorite subject in school? I think it’s communications. What is one thing you would change about Hermiston High School? More opportunities for sports for everyone. Not just varsity and JV. BUCKAROOS: Playoff opponents TBD Continued from 1B “Our game plan wasn’t necessarily to pitch her the whole game, but when she goes through six perfect you can’t take her out,” Cary said of Richards. “She’s just a tremendous competitor and she’s going to give you everything she’s got every time out and gives us an opportunity to win every single game when she’s in the circle and that’s what we want for these next hope- fully four games.” The Buckaroo bats took some time to figure out Mac-Hi pitching as well, as Pioneer starter McKennna Stallings allowed two hits and zero runs through the first three innings. But in the fourth, Pendleton finally found the groove. Payton Hergert started things with a one-out double and then Kalan McGlothan clobbered a two-run home run way over the fence in right-center field to give the Bucks a 2-0 lead. McGlothan had a team- high three hits and three RBIs on the day. Leading 3-0 in the fifth, Pendleton added on with a sacrifice fly from McGlo- than and later a two-RBI single up the middle by Kila Solomon to jump on top 6-0. The final two runs came across in the eighth when McGlothan scored from third on a wild pitch and then Tatum Fell smacked a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Rylee Gentner for the 8-0 lead. Mac-Hi’s lone run came in the bottom of the seventh when Ashlyn Marly dropped in an RBI single in shallow right field to score Fortune. Stallings took the loss in the circle, allowing three runs and six hits in four innings with one strikeout and two walks.
