SPORTS WEDNESDAY, MAY 17, 2017 1B FOLLOW US ON TWITTER @EOSPORTS Prep Softball & Baseball Pendleton softball, Hood River baseball take CRC’s top honors League coaches honor 17 Buckaroos, 11 Hermiston Bulldogs East Oregonian The Pendleton softball and Hood River Valley baseball teams were dominant in their runs to Columbia River Conference championships in 2017, and both teams swept the top conference postseason honors when they were announce on Tuesday morning. Pendleton senior Payton Hergert was named the CRC’s Softball Player of the Year, junior Lauren Richards was named Pitcher of the Year, and Tim Cary was awarded Coach of the Year after guiding the Buckaroos to a 10-2 league record. In baseball it was Hood River senior Isaiah Enriquez who earned both Pitcher and Player of the Year honors, and Eagles skipper Erich Harjo was named Coach of the Year. In total Pendleton had 17 athletes honored on one of the All-CRC teams, and the Hermiston Bulldogs garnered 11 selections. Hood River Valley tied Pendleton for the most players honored with 17, and The Dalles pulled in 12. Pendleton senior Wyatt Morris fi nished third in Player of the Year voting in baseball, and was one of three Bucks to make the fi rst team along with fi rst baseman Nick Bower and outfi elder Shaw Jerome, both juniors. Morris, a shortstop and pitcher, made the fi rst team in the infi eld and was selected to the second team as a pitcher. Hermiston’s two fi rst-team baseball selections went to junior Lukas Tolan as an infi elder (he also is a second-team pitcher), and junior Joel Mendez in the outfi eld. Pendleton girls take second in shortened fi nal round East Oregonian CRESWELL — In the fi rst three years of Haley Greb’s prep golf career, the Pendleton Buck- aroo established herself as one of the top golfers in Class 5A. After her fi nal championship round on Tuesday at Emerald Valley Golf Club, Greb ended her career by cementing herself as the best. In a weather-shortened second round that limited the 5A girls to just nine holes, Greb scored a two-over 36 on the front nine to fi nish with a 75-38—113 to claim her fi rst state championship. “It’s very indescribable,” Greb said afterward. “It’s always been a goal of mine to be a state champion and no matter how you get it to have that title is special. I owe a lot to my coaches and teammates and my parents, and it’s nice to know all the hard work paid off.” The Pendleton senior wasn’t alone at the top, though, as she tied with Summit’s Olivia Loberg to make the duo co-champions. They both overtook Wilsonville’s Kaitly Howe, who shot a fi ve- over par 41 on Tuesday to wipe out her fi rst-round, two-shot lead into a second place fi nish. Greb and Loberg have battled at the top of various tournaments all season long, trading wins back-and-forth, and Greb said it was fi tting that they fi nished the season on top together. “She’s a great gal and a great golfer and we’ve defi nitely had some good, positive battles,” Greb said, “so it was pretty cool to end it.” Behind Greb, Pendleton’s team turned in a second place fi nish after shooting 363-190—553 and fi nished just seven strokes behind champion Wilsonville at 359-187—546. Individually, sophomore Megan George fi nished tied for fi fth individually with a 86-44—130, Contributed photo cour- tesy of Haley Greb La Grande stops Stanfi eld’s win streak Grogan homers in loss East Oregonian The Stanfi eld baseball team’s winning streak was stopped at 21 games on Tuesday when La Grande scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to win 9-5 in non-league play at Madigan Field. La Grande, the No. 4 team in Class 4A, pushed its own winning streak to eight games as both teams played their fi nal game Baseball before the state playoffs. Dylan Grogan hit a solo home run in the La Grande fi rst inning for Stanfi eld (21-2), which out-hit La Grande 8-5, but pitchers Brad Bell, Jon Gonzalez and Garrett Vaughn combined to Stanfi eld strike out seven batters and Stanfi eld stranded eight runners in the game — two each in the fourth through sixth innings. Stanfi eld’s pitchers struggled to stay in the strike zone, and starter Klay Jenson walked eight before leaving in the fi fth having allowed six runs on just two hits. The switch to Tony Flores stymied La Grande (18-3) for a couple of innings, but three runs in the top of the seventh when Zack Jacobs hit a bases-loaded triple provided plenty of cushion for Vaughn to close out the win. La Grande never trailed after scoring four runs in the top of the fi rst inning. Stanfi eld scored twice in the fi fth to pull within 5-6 with Ryan Bailey and Brody Woods driving in runs, but back-to-back fl y balls ended the inning with the tying run on second base. Woods was 3 for 3 to lead Stanfi eld at the plate, and Flores was 2 for 4. Gonzalez went 2 for 4 to lead La Grande. Sports shorts Sharapova to miss French Open PARIS (AP) — Two-time champion Maria Sharapova has missed out on a wild-card entry for the French Open because of her doping ban. Announcing the decision on a live Facebook broadcast on Tuesday, French Tennis Federation president Bernard Giudicelli said he told Sharapova in person. “I decided not to give Maria Sharapova a wild card. I’m very sorry for Maria, very sorry for her fans. They might be disappointed, she might be very disappointed,” Giudicelli said. “But it’s my Sharapova responsibility, it’s my mission to protect the game and protect the high standards of the game.” Sharapova returned to tennis only last month following a 15-month ban for doping. Thanks to wild cards at her fi rst two tourna- ments, she got her world ranking to outside the top 200 this week, but that wasn’t good enough. “I think a person that’s dedicating their life to creating change, why wouldn’t you want that type of leadership in your locker room? I think that Kaepernick getting the opportunity to be on our team would be a good place for him because you have a coach like coach (Pete) Carroll who is up for challenges like that.“ — Michael Bennett Seattle Seahawks defensive end told 710 ESPN that he supports the Seahawks signing Colin Kaepernick as a backup QB. ESPN Radio’s ‘Mike & Mike’ ending after 17 years NEW YORK (AP) — ESPN Radio’s “Mike & Mike” are going their separate ways. The network announced Tuesday that Mike Greenberg would be leaving the longtime morning radio show he co-hosts with Mike Golic to host a new morning TV show on ESPN TV that will premier Jan. 1. Golic will stay in the morning radio spot and will be joined by a new partner in the network’s NFL host Trey Wingo. The radio show will be simulcast on television. Greenberg and Golic have been teamed since 2000. The show will end later this year. Greenberg says his “run with Golic has been an incredible experience,” but he’s looking forward to a new challenge. The network also says Golic and Wingo have multiyear extensions to stay with ESPN. THIS DATE IN SPORTS 1875 — Aristides wins the fi rst Kentucky Derby by a quarter length over Volcano.
