They will be joined by Pendleton’s Jenna Senter who earned the district’s No. 4 seed to BOYS TENNIS SUNRIVER — The Hermiston boys tennis team ran into the buzzsaw that is the Summit Storm at the Special District 1 tournament over the weekend, failing to steal a state qualifying spot. The Storm ran away with the team district title, and swept all four doubles qualifiers and clinched two more spots in the singles bracket. It’s a school record 10 players that the Storm are sending to state. “Summit tennis is like the Oak Hill of basketball,” Hermiston coach Shann West said. “They’re crazy good.” As a team, Hermiston finished sixth in the seven- team district which was disappointing for West to see. The Bulldogs top finishers were in doubles where Thomas McCullough and Patrick Wicks finished fifth — one spot away from a district berth. McCullough and Wicks lost to Summit’s No. 4 doubles team 6-1, 6-2 in the quarterfinals, and then met up with teammates Jason Morris and Koby Grigg in consolation. McCullough and Wicks won 8-2 in a pro set, and then won in three sets 3-6, 6-1, 10-8 to win the losers bracket. But with two outs, James West hit a pop fly to right field. Later in Game 2, Weston- McEwen took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Travis Hendley scored from third on a wild pitch. The lead didn’t last long, though, as Grant Union tied it in the top of the second and then added on with three more runs in the third to hold a 4-1 lead. Weston-McEwen got a run back in its half of the third on a Hunter Sater RBI double that brought home Hendley to make it 4-2, but that was all the TigerScots could muster. Dearing and Hendley both smacked three hits to lead the team on the day, while Brett East Oregonian JOHN DAY — The Weston-McEwen TigerScots wrapped up their 2017 regular season in disappointing fashion, as Grant Union won both games of Saturday’s doubleheader 5-4 and 4-2. Trailing 5-1 in their final at-bat in Game 1, the TigerScots (10-11, 8-8) nearly pulled off a thrilling comeback. Brendan Dearing singled and Travis Hendley reached on an error, setting up an RBI double by Brett Speed, a sacrifice fly RBI by Hunter Sater and an RBI groundout by Parker Munck to cut the lead to just 5-4. Speed added two hits, an RBI and three walks and Sater had two hits and two RBI. Sater threw 6 1/3 innings in the opener and gave up five hits and four runs with four strikeouts and a walk. Only one run was earned thanks to seven TigerScot errors. E 0 7 TRACK: Helix girls win third consecutive district championship Continued from 1B In the field events, Weston-McEwen’s Kirk Scott qualified for state in the shot put with a PR throw of 46-01.50, he won the discus (127-06) and the javelin with another PR of 162-10.50 — nearly 40 feet farther than second place Christian Haskell of Pilot Rock (126-11). Also securing state spots for the TigerScot boys were Hayden Scott in the 800 meters (2:00.03, PR) and 1500 meters (4:12.27), Kelen McGill in the 100 meters (12.06) and 200 meters (24.97), Braydon Rudolph (45.56) in the 300 meter hurdles, and Khai Robertson in the triple jump. The TigerScot girls finished fourth with 77 points, as both relay teams clinched state berths as they took first in the 4x400 and second in the 4x100. Sophomore Katie Vescio qualified in the 1500 meters (5:17.67) as well as the pole vault where she cleared a PR of 8-feet-4. Elsewhere, freshman Ellie Scheibner qualified in the 100 meters (13.46) and the long jump (15-04.50), while Bryce Thul also qualified in the long jump (15-07.50) and Maddi Muildenburg took first in the javelin (107.04). For the Heppner boys, distance runners Trent Smith and Hunter Nichols clinched two spots apiece as Smith took second in the 800 meters (2:12.64) and second in the 3000 meters (10:24.51), while Nichols was second in the 1500 meters (4:26.82) and first in the 3000 (9:58.15). Alex Lindsay clinched three spots, taking second in the 300 meter hurdles (46.40, PR), first in the long jump (18-11.00) and first in the triple jump (39-08.00) Derek Howard won the shot put with a throw of 46-08. For the Mustang girls, freshman Makayla Silvia was the only qualifier as she made the cut in the 100 meter hurdles (18.61, PR) and the high jump (4-04). The Pilot Rock girls team turned in a third place finish with 78 points, and they were led by junior sprinter Abby Rigby and senior Rachel Willingham. Rigby took first place in all three sprints, and anchored the 4x100 relay team that took first as well. Willingham took first in the 300 meter hurdles (50.36) and the triple jump (33-03.75). Also qualifying for Pilot Rock was Siobhan Holman who took first in the 100 meter hurdles (17.76) and second in the 300 hurdles. For the Rocket boys, Devin Hasher was the only other qualifier outside of Haskell, as he took first in the high jump (5-08) and second in the long jump (17-09.75). ——— Team Scores Boys 1. For Irrigon, sophomore sprinter Ana Zacarias qual- ified twice as she won the 100 meters (12.71, PR) and the 200 meters (26.82). Jose Romero qualified in both the 100 meter (17.47, PR) and 300 meter hurdles (43.49), while Justin Iveson made the cut in the long jump (19-07) and triple jump (40-11). The Grizzly girls clinched nine state berths, led by Bethany Newtson winning both the 800 meters (2:45.26) and the 3,000 meters (12:53.12). Following her was Emma Fehrenbacker in the 400 meters (1:04.70), Kaylee Cope in the 1,500 meters (5:40.51, PR), Sadie Wilson in shot put (30-04) and Kailey Mize in discus (95 feet) as well as Ariana Krol (88-8). Both 4x400 and 4x100 relay teams qualified as well. The Helix boys team finished fourth with 61 points and four state berths as Sam Carlson made the cut in the discus (122-03) and won shot put (41-07.50), Jon Shaw qualified in the triple jump (39-06.25) and the 4x400 relay team as well. Condon/Wheeler had a strong showing Saturday, as the Knights earned seven spots at state. For the boys, Jose Cortez was first in the 400 meters (54.09), Jake Bold first in the high jump (6-feet), Jacob Hoover second in the shot put (41-feet, PR) and the 4x400 relay team second. For the Knights girls, Alyssa Carnine was first in the 100 meter hurdles (18.01), Justine Homer second in the javelin (109-06) and Christine Segura second in the high jump (5-feet). The Arlington Honkers qualified four athletes for state, including Tyler Longacre in the 800 meters (2:09.25), Thomas Evans in javelin (164-09, PR), Benjamin Evans in javelin (163-09, PR), and Wesley Goad in high jump (5-08). Taylor Swaggart was Echo’s lone qualifier, as she clinched spots in the 100 meters (13.59), 200 meters (28.82) and long jump (15-09.50, PR).
