SPORTS Saturday, May 13, 2017 East Oregonian Page 5B Prep Roundup Stanfield baseball tosses fifth no-hitter, sweeps Vale East Oregonian VALE — The Stanfield baseball team kept rolling right along on Friday after- noon, as the Tigers swept the Vale Vikings with wins of 10-0 and 22-0 to finish off a perfect Eastern Oregon League schedule. The wins also boosted Stanfield’s win streak to 21 games. “They put in so much work and they’re so dialed in it makes it easy on me,” Stan- field coach Brad Rogers said. In the opener, Stanfield (21-1, 14-0 EOL) recorded its fifth no-hitter of the season as Dylan Grogan struck out seven in four innings and Klay Jenson struck out three in one inning of relief. It was the second combined no-no for the same duo, who previously did so on April 7 against Burns. At the plate in Game 1, Ryan Bailey led the Tigers with three hits, three runs and an RBI, while Brody Woods had two hits and two runs and Hunter Barnes two hits and four RBI. In Game 2, Brody Woods dazzled on the mound allowing just one hit in five innings. He also struck out seven and walked two in his second one-hitter of the season. Every starter reached base safely at the plate in Game 2, with Tony Flores leading the way with a perfect 4 for 4 game with a team-high seven RBI. Bailey added another three hits and three runs, while Thyler Monkus and Dylan Grogan each had three RBI. UP NEXT Stanfield will now wait to find out its first round playoff opponent. ——— Game 1 (5 innings) R H VHS 000 00 — 0 0 SHS 411 22 — 10 11 W — D. Grogan. L — Brown. 2B — R. Bailey (SHS). PILOT ROCK 15-13, UNION 0-3 — At Pilot Rock, the Rockets ended the regular season emphatically, beating down the Union Bobcats with wins of 15-0 and 13-3 on Friday afternoon. In the opener, Levi Thieme pitched a five-inning shutout for Pilot Rock (14-8, 12-4 SD6), striking out 10 and walking two, while giving up just four hits. He also went 1 for 3 at the plate with two runs, an RBI and a double. Chris Weinke hit a home run and tallied four RBIs as well, while Logan Weinke went 3 for 3 with three runs and two RBI. In Game 2, Chris Weinke took the mound and struck out eight over five innings. He allowed five hits, three runs and walked two. Joe St. Pierre went 3 for 4 with four runs and an RBI, Thieme was 2 for 3 with three runs and two RBI and Braydon Postma had three hits, two runs and two RBI. UP NEXT Pilot Rock will likely play Sherman in the first round of the Special District 6 tourna- ment next week. ——— Game 1 R H E UHS 000 00 — 0 4 3 PR 506 4X — 15 11 0 W — L. Thieme, L — K. IRRIGON 11, RIVER- SIDE 6 — At Irrigon, Austin Rice struck out five Pirates in 3 1/3 no-hit innings and added a double and two RBIs at the plate to help Irrigon past Riverside 11-6 on Friday afternoon. Irrigon (17-4, 10-4) collected eight hits as a team, led by Adrian Roa and Nate Gumbert with two hits apiece. Zach Henrichs drove in a team-high three and added a double. Riverside (4-19, 4-10) managed to score six runs with only two hits, as Irrigon helped out the Pirates with six errors and walked eight batters. ——— R H E RHS 120 000 3 — 6 2 3 IHS 126 020 X — 11 8 6 (R) Calvillo, Hegar (3). SOFTBALL PILOT ROCK 4-8, UNION 3-6 — At Pilot Rock, the Rockets finished up their regular season with a sweep of the Union Bobcats winning the opener 4-3 in walk-off fashion in nine innings and then holding on for an 8-6 win in Game 2 on Friday. In Game 1, Jacey Wilson led off the bottom of the ninth with a single and then advanced to second on an infield single. After both runners advanced to second and third with one out, Wilson then broke towards home on a wild pitch and stuck her hand under the tag from the Union pitcher for the winning run. Though the run wouldn’t have been possible if not for a game- saving catch by Vikki Walker earlier in the game, as she robbed Union (16-4, 10-2) of a home run in right field to keep Pilot Rock (21-4, 10-2 SD6) in the game. “I was proud of the girls and proud of the way they battled,” Pilot Rock coach Darin Fitzpatrick said. “That was two of the top teams in the state going head-to- head.” Then in Game 2, Pilot Rock fell into a 6-1 hole as it came to bat in the second inning but they were able to get four runs back to trail just 6-5, which was a huge swing, Fitzpatrick said. Then the Rockets took the lead in the fourth with a three-run inning and held on from there. “They kept their head in it the entire time,” Fitzpatrick said. “Down 6-1, we still played hard, had quality at-bats and played good defense down the stretch to keep (Union) scoreless. Both teams got a little sloppy with some errors down the stretch, but the girls refused to lose.” Bekah Roe had a big game for Pilot Rock in her second weekend back from injury, as the senior went 4 for 5 with a home run, two walks and four runs scored. Sara Weinke had a big day as well going 5 for 8 with a home run and a double, while Shayla Walker and Tehya Ostrom both had doubles. Ostrom also pitched both games for Pilot Rock and earned the win both times, tallying five strikeouts on the day. MAC-HI 11-7, BAKER 4-5 — At Milton-Freewater, the Mac-Hi Pioneers closed out their regular season with a pair of wins on Friday, beating the Baker Bulldogs 11-4 and 7-5 at Yantis Park. Sydney Richwine was Mac-Hi’s (17-5, 10-2 GOL) top hitter on the day, as she combined for five hits in seven at-bats with a pair of runs scored and two RBI. Micha Fortune added three hits on the day. In Game 2, Mac-Hi trailed Baker 5-4 going into the bottom of the fifth, until Ashlyn Marly smashed a three-RBI triple to right field to put the Pioneers on top 7-5. In the pitching circle, McKenna Stallings earned the win in Game 1 after pitching four innings of three-hit, three-run ball with three strikeouts. Mallory Copeland got the win in Game 2 pitching all seven innings and striking out six while allowing eight hits and five runs. Lambert, B. In Game 1, Echo (12-10, 8-4 SD1) overcame a 5-3 deficit after five innings with a four-spot in the sixth to grab the victory. In that frame, Hannah McCarty hit an RBI single Alex Putman hit a three-RBI double to left field to take the 7-5 lead. Kenzie Gonzales struck out nine in seven innings to earn the win for Echo, while Bailey Hillmick struck out 14 to earn the loss for Weston-McEwen. Hillmick and Jordyn Lambert each hit home runs for the TigerScots as well. In Game 2, Weston-McE- wen’s (12-7, 9-3) offense tattooed Echo pitcher Kendra Hart for 13 hits and 12 runs to earn the win. Hillmick collected three hits to lead the team, while Charmayne Bennett hit two home runs and Tyree Burke hit a home run as well. Sydney Peal had two hits and four RBI. Hillmick dazzled in the circle, striking out 11 more and allowing five hits and three runs in seven innings. No players from Weston- McEwen, Umatilla, Mac-Hi, Helix or Ione is still alive for a district title, with neither teams earning first round victories. Weston-McEwen finished the day the best, though, as both boys and girls doubles teams that qualified ended up winning the consolation bracket. In the girls bracket, Mary Bagdon and Christina Swafford defeated Mac-Hi’s Emily Cuellar and Janelle Martinez in the consola- tion final 8-5 in a pro set. And in the boys bracket, Michael Shafer and David Froese upset Umatilla’s Gio Armenta and Elian Armenta 8-2 in a pro set. The third place and first place matches will take place today at Whitman College. SUNRIVER — Pendle- ton’s Jenna Senter punched her ticket to the 5A girls staet championships with a win in the quarterfinals of the district tournament on Friday. She beat Robin Pashek of The Dalles, the same player that had eliminated her from last season’s district tourna- ment, 6-3, 6-3. She had also beaten Mountain View’s Alexi Overland 6-4, 7-5 on Friday. She will face Summit’s Autumn Layden, the overall No. 1 seed, in the semfinals. Still alive in the consola- tion bracket for the Pendleton girls is Danae Smith in singles and Kayla Walker and Brooke Lapp in doubles.
