A strong doubles lineup lifted the Suns over the Buckaroos 6-2, but Pendleton coach Rocky Dillenburg said he was happy with his team’s competitiveness during individual games. “We’ve just got to figure out how to win them at the end,” he said. “I anticipated those doubles would be pretty tough, but it was a good match for us to play against a quality team right before districts and I thought everybody competed hard.” The only two Bucks that got wins Wednesday were No. 1 singles Jenna Senter and No. 3 Danae Smith, both in straight sets. Senter took down Isa Morrison 6-0, 6-4, and Smith defeated Kaylee Gale 6-3, 6-4. Senior Elias Arenas and junior Antonio Fernandez both set new personal records in shot put and discus to finish 1-2 in both events. Arenas won the discus title with a 145-4.5 on his final throw, but had already secured the win when Fernandez fouled on his final attempt. Fernandez was easily in second, though, and reached his new PR on his penultimate attempt with 140-6 that was more than 25 feet further than the third-place throw. Fernandez came out on top in shot put later in the day, and his 49-10 on his first attempt in the finals hung in there as the top score. Arenas threw for 49-3.5 on his first attempt, then fouled on his next five. Jackson Mechado claimed another title for the Bulldogs in high jump, edging Pendleton’s Jonathan Stuvland by one inch with a height of 6-3. The Hermiston boys and girls squads were both out in front in team points, and Makayla AKers and Ebony Wilson won district titles for the girls. Akers beat out teammate Madelyn Juul for the javelin crown with a mark of 123-9 that is a new PR. Juul is also headed to state after finishing second with 111-0. Wilson was another Bulldog pushing her personal limits on Wednesday and she topped the long jump with a PR of 17-5 on her first finals attempt. “I feel great right now,” said Wilson, who also won her prelimi- nary heat in the 100 in 12.72. “It’s my goal to be in state in every event I do.” She will be making her third trip to state but first in long jump. Pendleton snared just two state berths out of the first day of action. Hailey Kendrick won the girls’ javelin with a PR of 9-3, and Jona- than Stuvland was second in boys high jump with height of 6-2. Kendrick’s vault drew an even louder reaction from the gallery than Ena’s long jump would later in the meet, as she broke the 9-foot barrier for the first time this season. The Buckaroo senior had been struggling to get back to the form that saw her clear 9-0.25 at last year’s state meet, and a switch to a heavier but more flexible pole was the thing to do it. “I got on a new pole and so that makes a big difference,” she said after earning her third state berth in the event. “But it was a little late in the season to change. I switched on to it two weeks ago. I wish I would have been on it sooner. “It’s been 8-6’s consistently (this season), and then nine last meet, so that’s what gave me I think confi- dence today.” Stuvland earned his state berth due to a tiebreaker when he and Hermis- ton’s Hiram Maciel both cleared 6-2 as their top height. Stuvland had done it on his first try, though, whereas Maciel hit it on his third. The only other events to hold finals on Wednesday were the boys and girls 3,000 meters, both won by Hood River Valley runners. Jesse Wiley won the boys race in 9:24.44 and Lottie Bromham paced the girls in 11:10.75. BASEBALL TREASURE VALLEY 16-2, BLUE MOUNTAIN 7-4 — At Pendleton, the Blue Mountain base- ball team wrapped up its 2017 home schedule by splitting a doubleheader with Treasure Valley on Wednesday, losing the opener 16-7 and winning Game 2 by a 4-2 score. The Chukars (24-19, 15-11 East) drew first blood in the first inning of Game 1 and added one in the third to hold an early 2-0 lead. BMCC (19-25, 10-16) tied the game in the bottom of the third on a bases-loaded walk by TJ Rea and a sacrifice fly from Austin Florez that brought in Casey Higginbotham. But TVCC re-took the lead in the top of the fourth with four runs on three RBI singles and kept its foot on the gas pedal the rest of the way. The Chukars tagged BMCC starter Connor Connolly, fresh off his best start of the season last week, for six runs, eight hits and three walks in just 3 2/3 innings. BMCC stranded 11 baserunners in the game, including twice leaving the bases loaded. Cameron Sutton was the T-Wolves top hitter going 3 for 5 with one run, three RBI and a double.
