SPORTS Saturday, May 6, 2017 NBA Playoffs East Oregonian Page 3B MLB Seattle’s Paxton lands on 10-day DL By TIM BOOTH Associated Press Frank Gunn/The Canadian Press via AP Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James (23) shoots over Toronto Raptors forward Serge Ibaka (9) during the second half of Game 3 of an NBA basketball sec- ond-round playoff series in Toronto on Friday. James shines as Cavs lead 3-0 over Raptors Associated Press TORONTO — LeBron James scored 35 points, Kevin Love had 16 points and 13 rebounds, and the Cleveland Cavaliers pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat the Toronto Raptors 115-94 on Friday night and take a 3-0 lead in their second-round playoff series. DeMar DeRozan scored 37 points and Jonas Valanci- unas had 19 for the Raptors, who were without three-time All-Star Kyle Lowry. They trailed by only two after three quarters before the Cavaliers quickly blew open the game. Game 4 is Sunday in Toronto. The Cavaliers are the first team since the Minneapolis Lakers in 1949 and 1950 to win their first seven playoff games in consecutive seasons. Cleveland won 10 straight to begin the playoffs last year. That streak ended when Toronto beat the Cavs in Games 3 and 4 of the Eastern Conference finals, but the Raptors couldn’t duplicate the feat this time around. ———— SPURS 103, ROCKETS 92 HOUSTON (AP) — Kawhi Leonard and LaMarcus Aldridge scored 26 points apiece to help San Antonio, now without Tony Parker, beat Houston to take a 2-1 lead in the Western Conference semifinals. Aldridge had managed just 19 points combined in the first two games, but stepped up in the wake of Parker’s season-ending leg injury, scoring nine points in the fourth quarter to help the Spurs pull away. Game 4 is Sunday night in Houston. James Harden led the Rockets with 43 points after scoring just 13 in Game 2. But he had just five assists and complained about the officiating all night. The Spurs were playing in the postseason without Parker for the first time since 2001, ending an NBA record of 221 straight playoff appearances for the Frenchman. SEATTLE — Mariners left-hander James Paxton was placed on the 10-day disabled list Friday with a left forearm strain, another blow for Seattle’s already short-handed starting rota- tion. The Mariners believe the injury is minor and Paxton will only miss two or three starts. But Paxton is the third pitcher from the projected starting rotation at the beginning of spring training to find himself on the disabled list, joining Drew Smyly (60-day DL) and Felix Hernandez (10-day DL). Paxton has been one of baseball’s best pitchers through the first month of the season with a 3-0 record and 1.43 ERA. “These are curveballs that happen. It just seems that they’ve been extreme,” Seattle general manager Jerry Dipoto said. “You can’t plan for these things. Paxton We’ve tried to create as much depth as we can. I think it’s working in the outfield, it worked in the infield. We’re still hitting a lot of rocky patches on the pitching staff. That’s pitching.” Seattle made a flurry of roster moves before opening a three-game series against Texas, including Paxton going on the disabled list. The Mari- ners other big move was optioning starting catcher Mike Zunino to Triple-A Tacoma and recalling Tuffy Gosewisch. An excellent defensive catcher, Zunino was hitting just .167 in 24 games and was 2 for 20 in the past eight games. Seattle also recalled infielder Mike Freeman and relief pitcher Evan Marshall and optioned outfielder Boog Powell to Tacoma. Paxton said he first felt forearm discomfort after his start April 26 at Detroit, when he threw seven shutout innings. Paxton attributed the discomfort to normal soreness, but the feeling he had pitching against the Angels last Tuesday was different, at which point he alerted the Mariners’ medical staff. Paxton had an MRI that revealed the Grade 1 strain. Dipoto said he believes the Mariners were fortunate to catch the injury before it got any worse. “In the L.A. game, it just got tighter and tighter as the game went on, and once I came out of the game, it was pretty sore,” Paxton said. In four of his six starts, he has not allowed an earned run, and his 45 strikeouts were third in the American League. Paxton was scheduled to start Sunday against Texas in the finale of a homestand. It will likely be either Dillon Overton, currently in Seat- tle’s bullpen, or Triple-A pitcher Christian Bergman getting the start. Former Ducks football star in custody after escape By STEVEN DUBOIS Associated Press PORTLAND — Former Oregon football player Colt Lyerla nearly died from a drug overdose Friday after escaping from custody near Portland. Hillsboro Police Lt. Henry Reimann said officers found Lyerla at a home a couple miles from the Washington County Jail after officers responded to a reported overdose. “He wasn’t breathing; CPR was administered,” Reimann said. Lyerla was eventually revived with naloxone, a drug that reverses the overdose effects of opioids. Once awake, Lyerla tried to flee, but officers stopped him, Reimann said. Police took him to a hospital for treatment. The 24-year-old Lyerla was sentenced last month to six months in jail after pleading guilty to forgery. He was lodged at the Washington County Commu- nity Corrections Center, a mini- m u m - s e c u r i t y Lyerla work release center across the street from the jail. It’s designed to help inmates successfully re-enter the community. Center director Steve Berger said Lyerla was discovered missing Thursday afternoon after an alarm alerted staff that a dormitory window had been opened. All inmates returned to their dorms for a headcount, and Lyerla was the only one missing. Reimann said he doesn’t know the connection between Lyerla and the house where he was found. “Apparently he knows them because he went there,” he said. One woman at the home was arrested on an outstanding warrant, Reimann said. Police are investigating whether to charge the residents with harboring an escaped inmate. Once considered an NFL prospect, the 6-foot-4, 242-pound tight end left the Ducks in the middle of the 2013 season after he was suspended for violating team rules. He has had several run-ins with the law since then. He pleaded guilty to cocaine possession in December 2013 and received a short jail sentence. A DUI charge in 2014 was dismissed. When he was arrested for heroin possession last August, his address was listed as “transient.” Another heroin arrest followed. Police arrested him this spring after the manager of a convenience store said Lyerla twice tried to pay with counterfeit $50 bills. When officers arrested Lyerla, they found heroin in his possession. Lyerla starred at Hills- boro High before heading to the University of Oregon. Every team bypassed him in the 2014 NFL draft. The Green Bay Packers signed him as an undrafted free agent, but he suffered a serious knee injury during training camp and was later waived. He later tried the Arena Football League and professional rugby in France.
