Page 2B SPORTS East Oregonian Wednesday, May 3, 2017 BASEBALL: Pendleton gains sole possession of second place Continued from 1B Bucks weren’t calling it a must-win. “We kind of just told ourselves we needed to win. We don’t need too much pressure on us. I think it helped us not knowing what could happen if we didn’t do our jobs.” Morris tossed the complete game, and after some strug- gles with his location in the sixth inning, went into the bullpen to work on things before coming back out for the seventh. He finished with seven hits allowed but gave up no earned runs and got his third strikeout on the game’s last batter. “My goal is to finish the game,” said Morris, who needed just 83 pitches to get through the game. “I didn’t go over the pitch limit, and that keeps other pitchers for next game. I went in the bullpen to work on a couple pitches because they weren’t working as well as I thought. I got them dialed in. “We try to win every game, but rivalry game is big. Beating Hermiston at home, it’s a big game.” Not only was it a big win for Pendleton (8-14, 4-5 CRC) in terms of its playoff hopes as it gave it sole possession of second with three games to play, it was a big performance for Morris, who has battled back sore- ness throughout the season. “Where I was last year, I’m just starting to come back to that,” he said. “You’ve got to have the mentality … just coming in a have-to-win game.” “Wyatt when he throws does a great job of throwing strikes, but throwing effective strikes — not just throwing the ball right down the middle, right on the edges all the time, and usually working ahead of hitters,” said Pendleton coach T.J. Haguewood. “He’s had a hurt back and he’s just getting back to strength, and right at the right time. We’re going to need him, hopefully, for a playoff run. He’s struggled this year a couple times out, and the last couple times it’s been the old Wyatt and he’s been dialed in, so that’s good to see.” Hermiston (9-13, 3-6) made Pendleton pay for its early miscues and Jordan Ramirez reached base on an error, advanced to third on a passed ball, then scored on an error to make it 1-0. But the Bulldogs couldn’t keep any momentum going through the middle innings, and it was too late when the team finally started to make some rumblings with a short rally in the sixth inning. “For a huge game I think our energy level was sub-par. I don’t know why,” said Hermiston coach Lance Hawkins. “It wasn’t until the last inning that we finally had a little energy, so I don’t know. I don’t get it, and that’s what we talked about. “I think (starting pitcher Caden) Schwirse threw pretty well. I wish we would have supported him at the plate a little bit more. It should have been closer than that.” With the exception of Joel Mendez (3 for 4) and Lukas Tolan (2 for 2), Morris kept Hermiston’s hitters in check throughout most of the game and was able to get some timely plays from his defense to end Bulldog scoring threats. Double plays got the Bucks out of the first and fourth innings, and the Bull- dogs had two runners thrown out at third base. Pendleton’s big inning came in the bottom of the second and was also aided by a few mistakes by the other team. Ryan Russell (2 for 4) led off reaching on an error, then a walk and a bunt by Hayden Villers (3 for 4) that got past Schwirse loaded the bases. Justin Duso was hit by a pitch to knot the score at one apiece, and then with a full count Lani cleared the bases with a double to the wall in center to make it 4-1. Hermiston scored one in the third on a double by Kaden Caldwell, but Pend- leton added runs in the fourth and fifth to go up 8-2. Russell touched home three times, Villers scored twice, and Morris and Duso each drove in two. Hermiston’s last run was scored by Slade Gritz on a passed ball in the sixth. The Bulldogs are tied for third with The Dalles (9-13, 3-6) and only the top three CRC teams will earn playoff berths, and only the top two will be guaranteed a home game in the postseason. “It’s gotta be within. You’ve got to want to do this,” Hawkins said. “So we’re going to come back tomorrow and practice hard, and get ready for Friday’s game. We’ve got a ton of talent, and I told these guys, ‘Once you get in the playoffs anything can happen, but we’ve got to get in the playoffs first. We’ve got to get in there.” UP NEXT Both teams play Friday at 4:30 p.m. with Pendleton at The Dalles and Hermiston hosting Hood River Valley. ——— R H E HHS 101 001 0 — 3 7 1 PHS 040 131 X — 9 10 5 W — W. SOFTBALL: McGlothan hits double to get Bucks going in second, then steals home Continued from 1B unearned run and two walks and struck out five, and then added two hits and four RBIs to lead the Buckaroos. “Hermiston’s always a little bit better of a victory,” Richards said with a smile afterwards. “But just like any game, we had to have our bats going and defense going because every game is crucial for us to get to where we want to be and I think we did good today.” Pendleton (19-3, 7-1 CRC) pounded out 10 hits to get its 10 runs, though all of the scoring came in two innings. The Buckaroos scored six runs in the second and five runs in the sixth inning, mustering just three baserunners and just one hit in the other four innings that the team batted. Hermiston (7-15, 1-7) coach Kate Greenough said that those two big innings were especially frustrating knowing how hard and how well the Bulldogs played in the remainder of the game. “Take those two innings away and it’s a great game,” she said. “The girls fight ahrd, but two big innings cost us. We talked about controlling the things we can control and we didn’t and it put us in a hole. They didn’t stop fighting and I really appreciated that, but there’s a disconnect of what we need to get done in seven innings time.” In that second inning, Kalan McGlothan led off with a double and then scored on a steal of home and then three batters later Kila Solomon hit an RBI double to center field to give Pendleton a 2-0 lead against Hermiston pitcher Julissa Almaguer. The Bucks loaded the bases after Maddy Parker was hit with a pitch and Tatum Fell reached on an error, which brought Richards to the plate with two outs. On a 1-0 count, Richards turned quickly on a thigh- high pitch and pulled it down the third base line and it rolled all the way into the left field corner to clear the bases with a three-RBI double. It broke the game open to a 5-0 Pendleton lead. “I just went up to the plate knowing what pitch I wanted and the pitch was kind of a mistake over the middle,” Richards said of the at-bat. “I just went for the pitch, it was down the middle and it felt good. I watched it go right past the third baseman.” After that second inning, freshman Janelle Almaguer took over for Hermiston in the circle and kept Pendleton hitters off-balance giving up just one hit in her first three innings. “She was trying to work hard and back up her sister which you love to see,” Gree- nough said of the freshman pitcher. “But we need to keep them off-balance the entire time. Good batters make adjustments and that’s what Pendleton did so we need to make sure we’re always working ahead and being smarter than the batter.” Janelle ran into trouble in the sixth inning, however, allowing a leadoff double to Solomon. It looked like Hermiston might escape the inning after getting the next two outs, but Kirah McGlo- than ripped an RBI single into left field which started a string of three-straight RBI singles as Richards and Hergert followed and boosted the lead to 10-1. Hermiston got its only run in the fourth inning, when Bailey Noland hit an RBI single into left field to score Sydney Stefani from third base. The Bulldogs had other opportunities to score, stranding eight runners total, including a bases-loaded, no-out situation in the seventh. Hermiston’s offense caused some issues for Pend- leton’s defense a few times in the game, as the Bulldogs barrage of bunt attempts and slap hits led to three infield singles and two Pendleton errors. Buckaroo coach Tim Cary said that when done right and consistently, Hermiston’s offensive approach can cause headaches for defenses. Brett Speed and Brendan Dearing both had three each to lead the team, with Speed picking up two doubles and six RBI and Dearing adding four runs scored. Hunter Sater had two hits for the Tiger- Scots, including a grand slam home run in the top of the second inning. Speed also picked up the win on the mound as he struck out four and gave up just three hits in four scoreless innings. Dearing threw a scoreless fifth and struck out two to end it.
