SPORTS WEDNESDAY, APRIL 26, 2017 1B FOLLOW US ON TWITTER @EOSPORTS HERMISTON Prep Roundup Thieme Bulldogs blank Riverhawks Complete team no-hits effort pushes Hermiston to Huskies dominant victory Pilot Rock baseball takes two in league doubleheader By ERIC SINGER East Oregonian After getting swept by The Dalles on Saturday, Hermiston coach Lance Hawkins let his team know he was disappointed. The Bulldogs were outscored a combined 14-3 in the two games and managed just nine hits at the plate and also tallied fi ve errors. “That wasn’t Bulldog base- ball,” Hawkins said, “and the Baseball guys knew it.” But after a fun and productive The Dalles practice indoors on Monday, Hawkins felt that his team had refocused a bit and rediscovered Hermiston the competitive edge that they needed to play with. And anyone watching Tuesday’s game against The Dalles at Armand Larive Middle School would agree, as Hermiston scored seven times in the fi rst inning and went on to win 9-0 over the Riverhawks for the Bulldogs fi rst shutout victory of the season. “This was huge because needed to show anger towards this team since they took two from us,” said Hermiston’s Slade Gritz, who went 1 for 4 with a run scored. “We needed to win and needed to win big so this was perfect.” Hermiston (8-11, 2-4 CRC) had perhaps its best, most complete team effort in the victory getting great pitching, great hitting and rock solid defense, all three of which have plagued the Bulldogs from time-to-time. Hermiston had six shutout innings from Caden Schwirse on the mound, zero errors behind him and an offense East Oregonian PILOT ROCK — Levi Thieme was nearly perfect from the mound as the Pilot Rock baseball team opened its Special District 6 doubleheader against Elgin with a 7-0 win on Tuesday. Thieme tossed a complete game no-hitter while striking out 17 and walking none, and was one pitch away from a perfect game. A dropped third strike on a wild pitch that came with two outs in the top of the seventh inning gave Elgin Baseball its only base runner of the game, and Thieme needed just Elgin 81 pitches to get the requisite 21 outs. He landed 82.7 percent of his pitches for strikes. Thieme also Pilot Rock drove in the Rockets’ fi rst run with a double in the fi rst inning that brought Chris Weinke in from third base. Logan Weinke scored on a wild pitch in the second inning to make it 2-0, and then Chris Weinke hit a two-run home run in the fourth to make it 4-0. The Rockets (11-4, 9-0 SD6) kept their momentum going in Game 2 for a 9-2 win that pushed their current streak to 10 games. Wienke started on the mound and struck out 11 while giving up two runs on six hits and no walks over six innings to get the win. Braydon Postma pitched a scoreless seventh and went 4 for 4 at the plate with two RBI. Thieme was 3 for 4, and Bryson Pierce was 2 for 3, and Tracker Denny was 2 for 4 with a two-run home run and four total RBI. Jenson needed just an average of 11.6 pitches per inning to retire Irrigon (13-2, 6-2 EOL) and fi nished with seven strikeouts and one walk. Brody Woods went 3 for 4 with two RBI for Stanfi eld (14-1, 8-0), and Adrian Renner was 2 for 3. Tigers coach Brad Rogers said Jenson’s performance was impressive, but it also couldn’t have happened without some stellar defensive plays in the fi eld. We’ve got to get back to being blue collar. We’ve got to make them earn the things they get here — and they get a lot.“ — Willie Taggart The fi rst-year football coach of the Oregon Ducks speaking to FoxSports.com about his plan to rebuild a program that just three seasons ago was playing for a national championship. MLB: Multiple groups have submitted bids to buy Marlins MIAMI (AP) — Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred says multiple groups have submitted bids to buy the Miami Marlins, and none has yet been accepted. Manfred’s comments came after Bloomberg reported a group led by former New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush won an auction for the team with a $1.3 billion bid. Completion of any sale by Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria could take months and would require approval by at least 75 percent of major league teams. More than half of the winning bid could involve cash because of MLB’s debt service rule, meaning the Bush/Jeter group would need to raise a lot of money. Quogue Capital investment fund founder Wayne Rothbaum has also pursued the Marlins, and talks with him might be restarted if the deal with the Bushes and Jeter stalls.
