The Buckaroos were 39 shots off the lead of team winners Bend, and senior Haley Greb said that gap is small enough for the Bucks to make a serious run at the Lava Bears on a different day. “Overall I think the team is in good spirits because we know we didn’t shoot our best and we’re not far from Summit (which placed second with 364) and these bigger schools,” she said. Greb was second medalist with a 77 to end her streak of consecutive tournament wins this season at fi ve, but had three birdies on a her scorecard and was pretty happy with her play from the tees and fairways. The greens seemed to give everybody trouble, though, and Pendleton coach Terry Prouse said a fresh cut and roll by the grounds crew made for fi rm surfaces that proved diffi cult for placing chip shots and putting. Greb said she had too many three-putts, and didn’t end the round like she wanted, but wasn’t too worried about it. “I hit my irons well, just couldn’t get a fi nish on the green,” she said. “But you can’t do it every day. You’re going to face adversity on the golf course.” Summit’s Olivia Loberg was medalist with a one-over par 73. Also for Pendleton on Monday were: Megan George, 98; Rylee Harris, 110; McKenzie McLeod, 107; Lauren Galloway 121. RODEO HERMISTON — Pendleton roper Trent Sorey was the only local to claim an average title at the weekend’s doubleheader high school rodeos at Farm-City Arena. Sorey won the tie-down title with an aggregate time of 20.71 seconds on two head, and vaulted himself to the top of the standings with a 9.12 that won Sunday’s round of competition. He was third in the fi rst round with an 11.59. Jacee Currin, of Heppner, won the fi rst round of goat tying on Saturday morning in 8.12 as the only other Intermountain team member to win an event in a round. Arlington’s Joely Patnode tied for the fi rst round win in breakaway roping with 2.98. Jake Raley (steer wrestling, team roping) won the boys’ all-around title and Kimberly Williams (breakaway, goat tying, pole bending) was the girls’ champ. Lindsay Doran won the Janice Davis Memorial Award with her 17.671-second barrel race on Saturday that was the fastest of the weekend. Pendleton got a bit of a fresh start on Saturday afternoon when it hosted The Dalles for its Columbia River Conference opener. The Buckaroos took advantage of the new season by sweeping the doubleheader against the River- hawks 7-6 and 13-7 on a sunny day at Bob White Field. “It’s a great start and a huge confi dence boost for our team,” Pendleton junior Nick Bower said. “To come out and get the sweep was great and we played well too, so it’s huge for us.” “Good baseball all the way Pendleton grinds out two Bucks softball sweeps doubleheader with The Dalles By ERIC SINGER East Oregonian The Pendleton softball offense for the 2017 season could be best described as inconsistent. Some games the Buckaroos look like one of the more complete teams in the state with contributions from every spot in the lineup. And then other games they struggle to string together productive at-bats. Through the fi rst 14 games of the season, Pendleton was averaging 6.2 runs per game and had crossed double-digit runs just three times, a far cry from the 10.1 runs averaged and eight double-digit games to start the season in 2016. In Saturday’s league-opening double- header against The Dalles, the Buckaroos’ offense showed both the good and the bad sides all in one day, though they did what they have done all season which was grind out victories at Steve Cary Field. Former Hermiston High runner and coach Jacob Puzey, currently of Calgary, Alberta, fi nished 37th in the men’s race in a time of 2 hours, 26 minutes, 52 seconds, which was about 18 minutes off the pace of champion Geoffrey Kirui of Kenya who won over Oregon’s Galen Rupp in a time of 2:08:37. Jacob Puzey Puzey’s younger brother Thomas of Flagstaff, Arizona, was 16th in a time of 2:18:20. Americans had six of the top 10 fi nishers in the men’s race and two of the top four women.
