OFF PAGE ONE Wednesday, April 12, 2017 East Oregonian Page 11A ELKS: At its peak had more than 3,000 members, now claims about 250 “Fraternal organiza- tions are just not the way people join (together) anymore.” Continued from 1A oversee the Pendleton Elks’ remaining assets for the next five years while they decide how to proceed. Blanc said the trustees’ imme- diate goal is to sell the Third Street building and find a smaller facility to act as a new headquarters for the lodge’s dwindling membership. When the Pendleton Elks moved into the Third Street building in the mid-1950s, it was to accommodate a growing group of members. Blanc said the Elks were established in Pendleton in 1902, its original lodge located in the Brown Building at 110 S.W. Court Ave. At its peak, Blanc said the Pendleton Elks claimed more than 3,000 members, an especially large figure considering that the fraternal order only admitted men for much of its history. The Elks now claims about 250 members, a group that is too — Larry Blanc, Pendleton Elks’ esteemed leading knight and public relations coordinator Staff photo by E.J. Harris Pendleton Police SWAT team members with Hermiston Police and Umatilla County Sheriffs department officers enter the front door of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks building while training Tuesday in Pendleton. small to maintain the property that inhabits more than half a city block. Blanc said the decline in membership has been the most pronounced in the past decade as older members pass away and younger residents flock to other types of civic organizations like Buck Boosters. “Fraternal organizations are just not the way people join (together) anymore,” he said. The Elks is far from the only club that’s been affected by this trend — Blanc pointed to similar organizations like the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce, better known as the Jaycees, that have gone defunct in Pendleton. The trustees are sending out letters to Pendleton Elks members that will update them on the current situation and advise them on other nearby Elks lodges they can attend. Blanc lamented that the Pend- leton Elks would have to suspend their charitable offerings, which includes student scholarships and veteran services. John Cook, the Pendleton Elks’ exalted ruler, said the national organization can provide an exten- sion on their charter if the Lodge No. 288 hasn’t sold the Third Street building and settled into a new home within five years. If the Pendleton Elks ultimately can’t find a way to move forward, Cook said the national organi- zation will absorb its remaining assets. Although the old lodge won’t host any Elks dinners or meetings in the near future, that doesn’t mean it’s going completely unused — the Pendleton Police Depart- ment conducted SWAT training in the building Tuesday. ——— Contact Antonio Sierra at asierra@eastoregonian.com or 541-966-0836.
