Dombrosky was the only double winner but 15 boys either won firsts or tied for first place in a meet that was graced with calm and sunny weather with temperatures in the high 60s. 25 Years Ago From the East Oregonian April 8-9, 1992 For years, Kenneth Blanchett has defied the laws of physics by squeezing his family of eight into a tiny home along Southwest Sixth Street in Hermiston. Later this year, the family will move down the block into a four-bed- room home built through the efforts of the Oregon Trail Habitat for Humanity. The Blanchetts were chosen last week to buy the first home planned by the newly formed affiliate of an international organization. Working with Habitat for Humanity volunteers, the Blanchetts will contribute about 500 hours of “sweat equity” work as their home is built. KFFX KPTV (19) CBS 100 Years Ago From the East Oregonian April 8-9, 1917 Pendleton and La Grande high school boys are being used to guard the bridges and tunnels along the main line of the O.-W.R. & N. in this county and Union County. The boys, equipped for service, are being sent out as soon as they can get ready. Five seniors of the La Grande high school arrived in Pendleton yesterday morning and this morning left for Campbell station to guard the bridge and tunnel near the Furnish dam. This morning seven Pendleton high school boys were enlisted for similar service at the bridges between here and Kamela. The employ- ment of these guards is done jointly by the railroad and the government. The guards are paid 20 cents an hour. Before May of 1934, it was allowed in the state of Oregon. A May 16, 1934 article in the East Oregonian reminded readers that the Oregon State Liquor Control Commission had issued an edict that people frequenting these sidewalk stands must be standing under the roof of the establishment while quaffing their glass of beer. And while Pendleton beer stands were following the new rules, owners and patrons weren’t very happy about it.
