Southridge’s only run came in the third to tie the score 1-1 when Richard hit her only rough stretch of the game with a hit batter and three straight walks. IRRIGON 11-6, HEPPNER 7-4 — At Heppner, both games started with a bang before turning into defensive battles down the stretch as Irrigon held on for a pair of non-league softball wins on Thursday. The Knights (4-0) never trailed, and scored four runs in the top of the first inning of Game 1, then added six more in the second inning. Heppner coach Rick Johnston said it didn’t seem to matter where he put his infield, Irrigon found the holes and scattered singles around the field. The Mustangs (3-2) kept pace, though, and scored five in the second inning to make it 10-7. From there Heppner’s Onna DeLoach and Irrigon’s Mya Chapman engaged in a pitchers’ duel with the Knights not scoring their final run until the top of the seventh. DeLoach did have a big game at the plate going 4-for-4, and Morgan Correa batted 2-for-3 for Heppner while Jada Burns was 2-for-2 with three runs and two RBIs to pace the Knights. Chapman finished with nine strikeouts to get the win. Then in Game 2, Irrigon’s Lily Mills hit a two-run home run in the top of the first inning, and Kayla Gilman pitched a complete game for the win. UP NEXT Irrigon hosts four games as part of the Riverside Round Robin next Tues- day-Wednesday. They’ll start off with Willamina at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, then play Burns later that day at 3:30 p.m. Heppner will host Knappa for a doubleheader on March 30. BASEBALL WALLA WALLA 10, PENDLETON 3 — At Pendleton, Nick Bower gave the Buckaroos a strong start when he blasted a three-run home run in the first inning on a non-league game at Bob White Field on Thursday, but Pendleton couldn’t make the lead stick. Walla Walla collected four earned runs in the sixth inning and then was gifted four unearned in the seventh to close out Pendleton (1-4). Pendleton coach T.J. Haguewood lamented his team’s four errors in the field, and said they continue to come at inopportune times as his bullpen is still trying to work their arms into game shape. “At the varsity level you can’t allow extra base runners and win ball games,” he said. “They’re doing a good job working through things, we’re just not making the plays consistently enough right now. But we’ll get there.” Haguewood said he’ll also have the team working on its plate approaches after some eager hacks on Thursday. “I thought we were a little bit too aggressive at times,” he said. “A lot of times we went for the pitcher’s pitch, instead of getting deeper in the count and getting the hitter’s pitch.” UP NEXT The two teams meet again today at Walla Walla with a 4:30 p.m. start. ——— R H E WW 010 104 4 — 10 9 0 PHS 300 000 0 — 3 6 4 M. STANFIELD 12, PILOT ROCK 2 — At Stanfield, the Tigers earned their second consecutive win of the season with a 12-2 win over Pilot Rock in six innings on Thursday afternoon. All nine Tigers (2-1) regis- tered at least one hit in the game, while Thyler Monkus, Dylan Grogan, Brody Woods and Damien Curiel each had two hits apiece. Woods also added two runs scored and three RBIs. Stanfield scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first and then two innings later Pilot Rock (1-4) answered with two runs on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to Braydon Postma to tie and then on a Stanfield error to take a 2-1 lead. Stanfield tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third on an error by Pilot Rock that allowed Monkus to score, and then took the lead for good just two batters later when Woods ripped a double to center field to score Flores for a 3-2 lead. HEPPNER 10, UMATILLA 6 — At Umatilla, the Heppner Mustangs came away victo- rious in their season-opener Thursday, defeating Umatilla 10-6. Lane Wilhelm carried the Mustangs (1-0) on the mound as he pitched 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing eight hits with one strikeout. Wilhelm also pitched in a 1 for 2 day at the plate with an RBI and three runs scored. For Umatilla () Diego Soto was a perfect 4 for 4 at the plate with one run scored, while also starting the game at pitcher where he struck out 11 batters in five innings while allowing five hits and four runs. After trailing for the first three innings, Heppner got on the board in the fourth on an RBI single by Parker Lehman to cut the deficit to 6-1. BOYS TENNIS BAKER 6, PEND- LETON 0 — At Pendleton, the Buckaroos were finally able to get the season started on Thursday after rain wiped out their previous match against Mac-Hi, though it didn’t end the way Pendleton would have liked as Baker went home with a 6-0 victory. “We won some games, won a set in the No. 3 doubles ... it was just a good starting match for us,” Pendleton coach Chris Holdman said. “Now we know what to work on and the new players know what to expect for next time.” Pendleton’s lone set win was by No. 3 doubles pair Joey Savage and Josh Mendoza in the first set to a 7-5 win, but then they dropped the next two sets 6-3 and 6-2. The No. 1 doubles pair of Silas Johnston and Justin Sellers nearly got a set win of their own as they went to a tiebreak but ended up dropping it 7-6. ——— Baker 6, Pendleton 0 Singles J. Weston-McEwen won three of the fourth singles matches and two of the doubles matches on the day. Mac-Hi’s wins came in the No. 4 singles pairing when Ian Miller knocked off Caleb Mann 6-3 and in the No. 2 doubles Mark Lua and Chris- tian Contreras took down Rob Davison and Calvin Papineau 9-8 after winning a tiebreak 9-7. The Grizzlies won their matches with relative ease, as Erik Jones defeated Austin Thompson 6-2, while Cody Dunn defeated Donovan Carmac 6-1. And in doubles action, Riverside picked up its win as Adolfo Bedola and Bryan Altamirano defeated Helix’s Alan Holden and Vitor Pedrosa 6-2. Helix coach Zach Orem said that Pedrosa joined the Grizzlies this week, which allowed them to put out a doubles team with No. 3 singles player Holden. “It will be a little bit of a project there, but I’m happy to have a doubles team,” Orem said. GIRLS TENNIS PENDLETON 6, BAKER 2 — At Pendleton, the Pendleton girls tennis team opened up the 2017 schedule with a big 6-2 win over the Baker Bulldogs on Thursday afternoon. “I was pretty happy with the play today,” Pendleton coach Rocky Dillenburg said. Pendleton swept all four singles matches, led by No. 1 singles player Jenna Senter rolling to an 8-0 pro set victory over Baker’s Hannah Johnson and another 8-0 victory by No. 4 singles player Bethany Flanagan. Weston-McEwen’s only loss of the day came in the No. 2 doubles match, when Mac-Hi’s Jennifer Robles and Soci Alvarez defeated Hannah McIntyre and Samantha Ford 8-5. In No. 1 singles, Helix’s Lynn Roberts shut out Condon/Wheeler’s Prema Nissinen with an 8-0 win and in No. 2 singles action Helix’s Kyla Roberts held off Margaret Campbell 8-6. “I think all the players came out and played really well,” Helix coach Zach Orem said. TRACK: Weston-McEwen’s Speed wins 200, 400 Continued from 1B showed its talent again, picking up wins in the boys and girls shot put with Elias Arenas and Maddy Juul, while Hiram Maciel earned the top spot in both high jump and triple jump. Rohrman said that he believes Herm- iston’s early success is owed to the team’s experience and overall talent. “We got a lot of experi- ence last year and we didn’t lose too many seniors as far as running goes,” he said. “We went to the weight room in the summer and hit the track in the winter and I think we’re just really prepared for the season.” One of the more exciting events of the afternoon came in the boys 200 meter dash, where Weston-McEwen junior Jacob Speed outlasted a late charge down the stretch from Pendleton’s Soren Wolf by a nose — winning with a personal-record 23.45 to Wolf’s 23.50. “I came off the corner really well,” Speed said of his run, “and then about the 75 meter mark down the stretch I started dying a bit and I could hear him coming and I just tried to tough it out.” Speed lived up to his last name throughout the day, also winning the 400 meter dash and bringing home a fifth place finish in the 100 meter dash, as well as anchoring Weston-McE- wen’s fourth-place 4x400 relay team. Speed said that coming from a 2A school and competing against the likes of 5A/4A/3A schools and competing well is a big confidence boost for him. “It feels really good, especially to do good against them,” Speed said with a smile. “It makes us feel better for the rest of the season and everything going forward.” Pendleton’s biggest success of the day came in the field events, where senior Johnny Stuvland earned first place finishes in both the high jump (6-02.00) and long jump (19-11.00). On the girls side, senior Kiara Glover also brought home a first-place finish in the high jump as she cleared 5-02.00 to tie with Enterprise’s Karli Bedard. The Buckaroos also had good performances turned in by Soren Wolf, who finished top-five in each of the 100 meter, 200 meter and 400 meter dashes, as well as sophomore Elisabeth House who finished ninth in the 100 meter, fourth in the 200 meter and second in the 400 meter dashes. Mac-Hi had two winners Thursday, as senior Landon Warne won the boys discus throw with a distance of 140-09 and sophomore Bianca Garcia won the girls javelin throw with a distance of 125-09 — more than 14 feet farther than second place. It slowed right down,” he said. “It took me awhile to get used to.” Greb beat La Grande’s Trinity McCarthy by seven strokes for her second tour- nament win of the season, but the senior also came away from the round feeling like she could have shot better. “Small greens, but obviously very manageable, you’ve just got to hit the shots,” she said. “I think it comes down to this course a lot about your iron play and short game. You don’t have to his it 300 yards, it’s not very long. I just didn’t get it done today.” Led by Snodgrass, Mark Felderman’s 77 and Tyler Vasser’s 79, The Dalles won the boys team title with a score of 314. Herm- iston was second with 320, and Pendleton was third with 325. Anders Lind shot 76 for the Bulldogs, and Hermiston coach Aaron Lind said it was a great way for his team to head into spring break. “We lost to The Dalles (Thursday) by six strokes, and we lost by 50 strokes a week ago to them at their place,” he said. “So it is a move in the right direction. … They’re motivated. I feel bad because I’ve got players that apologized, ‘I know I let you down.’ Hopefully we have a big spring break, we’re going to play some hard courses, and this is a positive that we can just run with.” It was also a move in the right direction for Pendle- ton’s boys, who got an 80 from Jared Geier and an 84 from Trevor Reyes to help lead the team score. Pendleton won the girls team title over Hermiston 377-400, and Buckaroos sophomore Megan George shot 90 for third place individually. Hermiston’s low score was a 93 by Grace Blackhurst. Athlete of the Week Twenty questions with Riverside’s Skylar Wightman East Oregonian BOARDMAN — The Riverside Pirates softball team started the 2017 season a perfect last week, with a big thanks to junior Skylar Wightman. In the opening double- header at Elgin, Wightman earned two wins in the pitching circle and crushed a three-run home run in Game 1 as Riverside beat Elgin by a combined score of 34-2. For her efforts, Wightman has been selected as the East Oregonian’s Athlete of the Week for the week of Mar. 13-18. ——— EO: What age were you when you first played a sport and what sport was it?
