Wednesday
•An Oregon State Police trooper caught a thief in the night.
State police reported trooper Mitchel Pace at about 1:30
a.m. tried to stop a beige Chevrolet Astro on Highway 395
around milepost 6 south of Pendleton for a traffic violation.
The mid-sized van turned onto Southwest Cheryl Avenue near
McKay Reservoir and the driver jumped from the vehicle.
The trooper chased the driver for a few seconds, then
contacted the passenger, Timothy Allen Okaly, 39, of 323 N.E.
41st St., Pendleton. According to state police, Pace looked in
the van and found four tires on four chrome wheels, and Okaly
admitted to stealing them minutes earlier.
The trooper drove the suspect to where he said he took the
tires, and a man there confirmed they were his and worth about
$1,200.
Pace arrested Okaly for first-degree theft and took him on
one more ride — to the Umatilla County Jail, Pendleton.
