It was precipitated by the resignation of Chief of Police Gurdane who stated to the council that he could no longer serve under Mayor J.A. Best. Before the storm ended charges and counter-charges were hurled, the lie was passed, threats were made of startling revelations and, it is said, only the presence of more pacific members prevented physical encounters. The end is not yet. According to authoritative report, there will in all probability be another outbreak at the next regular meeting of the council when, it is said, Mayor Best will be asked to resign as chairman of the police committee. In the event of his resignation or removal, it is not unlikely that the council will reinstate Chief Gurdane. 50 Years Ago From the East Oregonian March 10, 1967 Rep. Al Ullman is quietly laying the groundwork for what could become the biggest irrigation project in Oregon. The lands in question lie in eastern Oregon along the south bank of the Columbia River between Pendleton and The Dalles. The south bank project, as Ullman refers to it, could involve irrigation of anywhere from 100,000 to 300,000 acres by his estimate. The only Northwest irrigation project that exceeds that in size is the massive Columbia Basin project in central Washington state connected with Grand Coulee Dam. The basic idea behind the south bank project would be pumping water onto the land directly from the Columbia River. 25 Years Ago From the East Oregonian March 10, 1992 A Hermiston man charged last October with the attempted murder of a 7-month-old boy has avoided prison time with a negotiated plea. Michael S. Buckles, 27, pleaded guilty March 3 to one count of second-degree assault and was sentenced to three years probation following a recommendation from prosecutors. In exchange for the guilty plea, charges of attempted murder, another count of second-degree assault, criminal mistreatment and child neglect were dismissed.
