SPORTS Wednesday, March 8, 2017 East Oregonian Page 3B Men’s College Basketball NFL No. 4 Gonzaga extends reign in WCC Seahawks don’t tender CB Shead after knee injury Gonzaga players celebrate after defeat- ing Saint Mary’s in an NCAA col- lege basket- ball game during the champion- ship of the West Coast Conference tournament, Tuesday, March 7, 2017, in Las Vegas. Gon- zaga won 74-56. By JOHN MARSHALL Associated Press LAS VEGAS — Nigel Williams-Goss scored 22 points, Przemek Karnowski added 15 and No. 4 Gonzaga won its fifth straight West Coast Conference Tournament title by beating No. 19 Saint Mary’s 74-56 Tuesday night. Gonzaga (32-1) was not particularly sharp in the WCC semifinals, beating Santa Clara by nine to reach the title game for the 20th straight season. The Zags got their mojo back in a dazzling first half against Saint Mary’s, then had to hold on after a shaky start to the second. Gonzaga shot 50 percent and had a 38-22 advantage inside, staking claim to a potential No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Saint Mary’s (28-4) fought back after an ugly first half, but couldn’t overcome a 21-point deficit for its third loss to the Zags this season. Calvin Hermanson had 14 points and Jock Landale 10 for the Gaels, who must wait out selection Sunday for the second straight season. Gonzaga and Saint Mary’s in the WCC final has become an annual tradition. The conference’s top two teams have met in the title game seven of the past nine years, By TIM BOOTH Associated Press SEATTLE — Cornerback DeShawn Shead and backup linebacker Brock Coyle will not receive qual- ifying offers from the Seattle Seahawks, meaning both players will become unrestricted free agents when the new league year begins later this week. Cameron Foster, the agent for both players, said Tuesday that the Seahawks have made the decision not to use the tender option as both players are restricted free agents. The decision with Shead is surprising after he became Seattle’s starting cornerback late in the 2015 season and held the spot throughout 2016 opposite Richard Sherman. The former undrafted free agent out of Portland State played well with 81 tackles, 14 passes defensed and one interception — of New England QB Tom Brady — in the regular season. But he suffered a torn ACL in Seattle’s playoff loss to Atlanta in January and that changed the scope of his offseason. Seattle general manager John Schneider said at the NFL combine last week that Shead could miss a chunk of the 2017 season as he recovers from his injury. Seattle has already signed veteran Parrish Cox to help with depth at cornerback and is expected to be active in a very deep draft class looking to add options at cornerback. Shead was expected to be part of those plans all along. And he still may be, but Seattle is now opening up the possibility that Shead takes an offer elsewhere. “It was really unfortunate for the young man. He would be in a different world right now if not for that injury,” Foster said. Coyle has spent all three of his seasons with the Seahawks, serving as a fill-in starter and regular on special teams. Coyle has mostly backed up middle line- backer Bobby Wagner, but last year made three starts at strong side linebacker when Mike Morgan was injured. The former undrafted free agent out of Montana has appeared in 35 regular-season games with five starts. AP Photo/John Locher with the Zags winning six titles, including the past four. Gonzaga won the two regular-season meetings this year fairly easily, beating the Gaels 79-56 in Spokane, 74-64 in Moraga. The Zags won their first 29 games of the season before a home loss to BYU, which Saint Mary’s beat by 31 after hitting 13 3-pointers in the WCC semifinals. The Gaels didn’t have the same shooting touch against Gonzaga’s smothering defense, needing nearly 11 minutes just to crack double figures scoring. Saint Mary’s #19 St. Mary’s 56 #4 Gonzaga 74 was discombobulated offen- sively throughout the first half, hitting 6 of 28 shots and turning it over 10 times while scoring 18 first-half points. Gonzaga turned the missed shots and turnovers into baskets in transition, using a 12-0 run to build a 39-18 halftime lead. The Gaels were better to start the second, shutting the Zags down while trimming the lead to 51-46 midway through. They got no closer. Landale had to leave after picking up his fourth foul and Gonzaga took advantage, stretching the lead back to double digits. BIG PICTURE Gonzaga will likely contend for No. 1 in the NCAA Tourna- ment’s West Regional with the Pac-12 Tournament winner. Saint Mary’s should have a good enough resume to make the NCAA Tournament despite the loss, but could have some anxious moments on selection Sunday after being left out last season. TO THE People of Wallow County, Thorough this letter I would like to offer my sincerest apology on behalf of myself as well as my car club. In early August 2016, I was driving too fast through your county and did not follow all the laws of the road. Driving at an excessive speed of over 130 mph is unsafe and I will not drive that fast on a public road again. There are many non-public places to enjoy high speeds responsibly and I will follow the rules and will only attend these events in the future. I hope that through this letter we can begin to make up for my wrong doing. Thank you in advance as we all really enjoyed your lovely community.
