Pendleton has been getting big contributions from seemingly different players each night in this win streak, but on Tuesday night it was once again the Caden Smith show for the Buckaroos. The guard led all scorers with 32 points on 10-19 shooting and 7-15 from 3-point range, and added in four assists and five steals. Smith said he came into the game more focused after a cold shooting night on Monday where he scored just seven points on 3-14 shooting in a win against The Dalles. His confidence was obvious from the start, as he nailed a 3-pointer from the top of the key for the game’s first points, and then scored a transition lay-up just seconds later and by the end of the first quarter, Smith already had 10 points. In the second quarter, Smith stayed hot shooting as he made a 3-pointer on three consecutive Buckaroo possessions, two of which would have been successful in the NBA. Smith finished the half with 20 points overall and his Bucks led at the break 35-27. “Whenever I’m hitting like that, we all know it’s going up until I miss,” Smith said with a smile after the game. “It’s just having confidence in myself and knowing my teammates believe in me every shot.” Tedder said that he challenged Smith prior to the game to step up and take control on offense again. “Whenever you’re the guy that all five defenders and trying to stop every single possession, you’re going to have a day here and a day there where it’s off,” Tedder said. “The difference between him and other players though is that he can manage the situation and help us in other ways than just scoring Staff photo by E.J.Harris Pendleton’s Caden Smith shoots a jump shot over Hood River’s J.J. Mears in the Bucks’ 64-48 win against the Eagles on Tuesday in Pendleton. and that’s what makes him such a valuable asset to our team.” Smith also led the charge on defense for the Buckaroos to start the second half, as the team came out of the locker room more focused and with a little more energy than was displayed in the first half. Four of his five steals came in the quarter, where Pendleton held Hood River to just four points on 2-9 shooting and had eight steals to take a 50-31 lead at the end of three. “I thought for the first five HERMISTON: PREPS: Romero scores 20 to lead girls Continued from 1B Continued from 1B points and Maddy Juul added 15 points for Hermiston (11-9, 5-1 CRC). It wasn’t Hermiston’s final home game, but prior to tip-off they honored their four seniors Hayden Meyers, Rileigh Andreason, Kynzee Padilla and Shaelynn Gilbert. The game didn’t start the way the Bull- dogs had hoped as The Dalles (7-10, 2-5) was able to control the tempo. “They’re a crafty team and they like to slow it down, really take their time,” Rodriguez said. “It was hard to speed them up like we wanted to.” But that started to change in the second half and Romero hit a pair of big three- pointers as the Bulldogs extended their lead out to 15 points at its largest. Rodriguez said he was able to sit all of his starters for the closing minutes. BOYS BASKETBALL HERMISTON 61, THE DALLES 57 — At The Dalles, Bulldogs coach Casey Arstein was grateful to leave town with a win after turnover-filled game made for high drama in Columbia Conference play on Tuesday. “It was a long night in The Dalles, we’re glad to get a win, but a pretty sloppy game,” Arstein said. “It all starts with about seven travel calls, we didn’t help ourselves out. We missed some easy shots and gave up transition buckets. “It’s a little bit frustrating because as a team we want to start hitting our stride, and going into our last round of league games we need to hit it real soon.” Although too close for Arstein’s comfort, Hermiston was able to hold the lead at the end of every quarter. The Bulldogs were up 34-31 at halftime, and 53-44 going into the fourth. The Dalles () made a run, though, and tied the score twice in the fourth quarter. Those ties triggered sophomore Andrew James’ biggest plays of the night as he forced a couple of turnovers to get the ball back for the Bulldogs. Chance Flores scored eight of his game-high 22 points in the fourth quarter, and the Bulldogs were 7 of 11 at the free throw line in the frame. Xavier Rambo added 18 points and Hunter Walls scored nine on a trio of three-pointers in the first half. Hermiston will honor its seniors before its next home game on Friday against Hood River. Stacy Fitzpatrick added 12 points, and Nixyaawii (21-0, 14-0 OOL) was up 33-9 by halftime. “We just stayed in the half court and played out zone and just had some great rotation,” Maddern said. “They have a few pretty good shooters and we held them to the one three-pointer, so I thought that was good. “We just out-rebounded them tonight and got out and ran. … We were sharing the ball really well, and had very few turn- overs.” Maddern said earning the program’s first undefeated regular season was a huge moti- vator for the team. “We really treated this like a championship game because that’s really been driving us, to finish without a blemish,” he said. Nixyaawii will wipe the slate as it heads into the postseason, which begins for the Golden Eagles in the second round of the district tournament at 6:30 p.m. on Friday at Baker High School. PILOT ROCK 46, WESTON-MCEWEN 40 — At Hermiston, the Pilot Rock Rockets clinched the No. 1 seed at the CBC district tournament and a spot in the state tourna- ment with a hard-fought 46-40 win over Weston-McEwen on Tuesday night. “I tried to downplay the game beforehand to keep it calm,” Pilot Rock coach Butch Wilson said, “but the girls knew what was at stake and wanted it too much. They were all real happy.” Wilson said that the Rockets (17-4, 6-2 CBC) and TigerScots (15-7, 6-2) pretty much mirrored each other in the game, both deploying zone defenses and on occasion full-court presses, and then both making runs throughout the game. But the Rockets were able to stay on top with a balanced scoring effort, as four players netted six points or more. Jacey Wilson led the team with 13 points and six rebounds, while Bekah Roe added 12 points, seven rebounds and six steals. Sarah Finifrock led Weston- McEwen with 12 points and Katie Vescio had 10. The Rockets now get a bye to the district title game on Saturday, and Weston-McEwen minutes of the game, we were good, but then I think we hit that wall,” Tedder said. “I told the guys, ‘if that happens in the playoffs, how will we respond? I don’t care if you’re tired or fatigued, you just have to get through it. “I thought we came out and started well in the third contesting shots, controlling the boards which lead to quick, easy offense.” The only other Buckaroo to reach double figures in scoring was senior Wyatt Morris with 13 points, who continues to be a solid No. 2 scoring option for the Buckaroos in league play. “Wyatt’s really come into his own,” Tedder said. “He’s the kind of guy that needs that first month to really get in the flow and get a bunch of shots up and I kept telling him ‘Be patient, it’s coming’ and here he is averaging 10 points in league play and doing the little things.” Over its eight game win streak, Pendleton has won by an average margin of 20.3 points but has won its six league games by an average margin of 25.2 points. But even with that amount of success, the Buckaroos know that they cannot let it get to their collective heads. “You can never overlook a team because you never know what kind of night they’ll have,” Smith said. “So you just have to come out and bring 100 percent every night, and if we do that we’ll have a good shot to win.” UP NEXT Pendleton hits the road for its second game at The Dalles, where it won 70-35 the last time out on Jan. 27. ——— HRV 11 16 4 17 — 48 PHS 17 18 15 15 — 65 HOOD RIVER — C. An 8-0 run with two minutes left put Ontario (5-16) into the lead for good, and Mac-Hi got within two points but had to start fouling with time running out. It was the second night in a row the teams had met, with Ontario also winning by five points on Monday in their league finale. Also like on Monday, Mac-Hi (1-18) dominated in rebounding with a 54-25 margin. Brooke Smiley led them with 17 rebounds, and Sydney Richwine had another double- double with 10 rebounds and a team-high 15 points. Smiley finished with seven points and Brianna Hernandez added 11. Drea Peterson led Ontario (5-16) with 16 points, and the Tigers will play at La Grande on Thursday in the second round. The loss ends the season for the Pioneers, and coach Brooke Garton said she saw plenty of development despite the single win. “I’m really proud of how we finished off the season and the improvements that we were able to make,” she said. “The girls really worked hard and they never gave up.” The Pioneers will lose four players to graduation — Richwine, Smiley and reserves Cynthia Flores and Chelsey Holford. ——— M-H 8 8 15 10 — 41 OHS 8 12 9 17 — 46 MAC-HI — S. Senior post Hayden White had another big game with 21 points to lead Irrigon (15-7) to its fourth win in a row. Johnny Philips added 15 points and Austin Rice chipped in 10. “It was a very, very intense game,” said Irrigon coach Davy Salas. Irrigon will play at Umatilla on Friday in the district champi- onship. No game time had been announced at press time. It will be the third time this season the teams have met, with Umatilla winning both previous match-ups. Their most recent game was a nail-biter 49-48 on Jan. 31 in Umatilla. “We’re excited to get the chance to play Umatilla for a third time,” Salas said. “We’re excited to get out there and have a good one.” ——— BURNS — D. WESTON-MCEWEN 60, PILOT ROCK 53 — At Hermiston, the Weston-McEwen TigerScots clinched a spot in the district tournament with a 60-53 win over Pilot Rock on Tuesday night in a league playoff game. The game played out just like the last meeting between the two teams — one team leads most of the way, before the other team makes a run to win it. However this time, the teams flipped roles. Pilot Rock (11-10, 4-4 CBC) was the team that led for most of the way, holding a nine point advan- tage midway through the third quarter before Weston-McEwen (13-9, 4-4) flipped the switch and made its comeback. “Pilot Rock played hard tonight, they came out with a lot of energy and took it to us to start,” Weston-McEwen coach Brian Pickard said. “But then we picked it up on the defensive end and got some stops and then we started to take it to them.” Shaw Broncheau led Weston- McEwen with 18 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals, and Ethan Reger followed with a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds. However, Brendan Dearing and Brett Speed were huge contrib- utors for the TigerScots in the fourth quarter, as Speed hit three 3-pointers and scored nine of 5-5, PHS 11-15. Fouls — HRV 8, PHS 12. GIRLS BASKETBALL PENDLETON 53, HOOD RIVER VALLEY 37 — At Hood River, the Pendleton Buckaroos used their advantage in the posts to run away from Hood River on Tuesday night, beating the Eagles 53-37 in the Buckaroos’ final road game of the regular season. “We just knew tonight was a road win we needed to have,” Pendleton coach Kevin Porter said of the win. “We started out good ... and then came out of the gate in the second half and basically put the game away in the third quarter.” Kalan McGlothan led all scorers with 20 points for Pendleton to go with 10 rebounds. “She’s just so strong in the post and the guards did a good job of getting the ball inside to her,” Porter said. “When she gets posi- tion inside, she’s hard to handle. Overall it was really good team offense, hitting the right people at the right time.” Behind McGlothan, Haley Greb had 11 points, five boards, two assists and two steals, and Lauren Richards had eight points. Hallie Porter led the team in assists (3) and steals (4). All 10 players played significant minutes in the game, and eight got into the score book.
