Grieb was 11 of 17 (65 percent) from the field, and the Mustangs shot 41 percent (22 of 54) as a team. Grieb also tied Kevin Murray with eight rebounds for the team lead as the Mustangs out-re- bounded the Bulldogs 37-18. Heppner (12-6, 4-4 CBC) was up 18-7 after the first quarter and 33-19 at halftime. Heppner’s next game is Friday in Pendleton in the district tournament. Tuesday, February 14, 2017 Buckaroos send four wrestlers to state By ERIC SINGER East Oregonian HERMISTON — Pendleton wres- tling coach Fred Phillips knows that tournaments never go the way coaches hope. Phillips was hoping to have as many as seven or eight wrestlers to take to the state tournament in two weeks, but following the 5A Special District 4 tournament this weekend at Hermiston High School, he’ll have to settle for four. Senior Morgan Holcomb took home his third-straight district title, this time at 160 pounds, and sophomore Alex Rendon won the title at 132 pounds for Pendleton — the Bucks’ lone district title winners. But also earning spots in the state tournament was senior Scott Chambers with a third-place finish at 160 pounds and senior Jeff Kovach taking second at 138 pounds. Pendleton finished fourth overall as a team with 185.5 points. “I thought our better kids performed the way they should have,” Phillips said. “I fully expected Alex and Morgan to win the tournament. But overall, we’ve been living all year on first-year kids and sophomores, and this weekend we looked like first-year kids and sophomores. Some of that is level of competition we’re dealing with and some of it was kids were star struck, realizing ‘this is a big deal, we’re trying to qualify to go to state.’” Holcomb has been Pendleton’s best wrestler for each of the past few seasons, and showed why he is one of the best in the district this weekend by winning all four of his matches by fall. Holcomb had been wrestling at 152, but decided it was best to go to 160 to better his chances for district and state success. He said it’s always his goal going into a Staff photo by E.J. Holcomb went on to de- feat Mountain View’s Frankie Lesowski to claim the district cham- pionship on Saturday. match to go for the pin. “It’s a lot of motivation and a lot of adrenaline,” he said. “As soon as I can get a kid on his back I know I’m going for the pin but then again I have to be careful or else I might get caught.” Holcomb took on Mountain View’s Frankie Lesowski in the finals, where he nearly got a pin early in the first round. The Buckaroo senior was in control the whole way, and as he got top position on the second period restart, Holcomb made his move. Lesowski tried to take a shot and Holcomb caught it and flipped him into a pin for the victory just eight seconds into the second round. “I wasn’t expecting it,” Holcomb said of Lesowski’s shot. “We were both up and he just wrapped his arms around me and tried to throw me and I just caught him and I just pinned him. It just happened and then I got excited.” Rendon also made quick work in the finals, as he pinned Hermiston’s Oscar Lopez 52 seconds into the match to claim victory. Then at 138, Kovach, a transfer from Ontario this season, faced two-time district champion C.J. Hendon of Hermiston and lost by fall at 3:23. Earlier in the day, Chambers took on Bend’s Payton Davis in the third-place match — a meeting that had already happened earlier in the tournament. The pair met in the quarterfinals with Chambers winning with an 11-1 major decision, and this time around Cham- bers came out on top again, but by fall. “I had already wrestled him (Friday) and beat him and I knew he’d be looking at that match and thinking what he needed to change,” Chambers said, “so I was expecting him to wrestle a lot tougher. I’m pretty excited though, I was hoping to wrestle Morgan in the finals, but that didn’t happen so I’m pretty excited I got third.” Pendleton also had five other placers in the tournament: Lane Evens fifth at 113, Blake Davis fifth at 126, Josh Mendoza fifth at 182, Aiden Henderson fifth at 195, and Jamal Vann fifth at 220. “I think we had some real growing and we learned from it this weekend,” Phillips said of his team. “I have some kids that didn’t place that were close and they’re ready to keep going now. “Will they follow through on it? I hope so, but they seem to have the right idea about where we need to go from here.” Pendleton wrestled this season with 20 sophomores on the roster, 16 of which wrestled at the district tourna- ment and in a lot of tough matches, and Phillips hopes that experience feeds to improvement next season. “Hopefully it motivates them to do the right things to be at that next level,” he said. “To be state qualifiers and state placers, they have to under- stand you can’t just be successful and wrestle from November to the end of February. The victory was the 17th consec- utive win for the Tigers, who now head into the district tournament as the No. 1 overall seed as well as holding the No. 1 OSAA ranking in Class 2A. “Pilot Rock came out and never gave up,” Stanfield coach Jason Sperr said. “We had an 18 point lead, but they slowed the pace down and back into it. But I think our guys handled the pressure well and at the end they did a good job of coming up with the right plays at the right time.” Ryan Bailey led Stanfield (18-1, 8-0 CBC) with 14 points and Thyler Monkus had 12. Brody Woods and Tony Flores each scored 11 points apiece. Tracker Denny led all scorers with 22 points for Pilot Rock (11-9, 4-4), while Devin Hasher had 11 and Bryson Pierce had 10. Stanfield has a bye in the district tournament, and will play for the title on Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Pendleton Convention Center. Pilot Rock (16-4, 6-2 CBC) was carried by its senior class in the game, as Jacey Wilson (13 points), Bekah Roe (11) and Rachel Willingham (11) each finished in double figures. But perhaps the best moment of the night was when Irena Makhayena, a foreign exchange student from Kazakhstan, scored a basket at the end of the game for her first basket in her first-and-only varsity action of the year. “It was a really awesome moment,” Pilot Rock coach Butch Wilson said. “I give credit to (coach) Daniel Sharp and Stanfield, as they backed off a bit and let Irena score. It was a real class-act by that group.” Kendra Hart and Natalia Esquivel each scored eight points apiece to lead Stanfield (4-16, 1-7). The Rockets win puts them into a tie with Weston-McEwen atop the CBC standings, and both teams await a game between Culver and Heppner on Monday.
