For more information, call 541-966-0818 or 1-800-522-0255, ext. 221. Gene Baker, 88, of Pendleton, Oregon, died Thursday, Feb. 2, 2017, at St. Anthony Hospital. Gene was born June 3, 1928 outside Gran- geville, Idaho, to Howard and Lavonne “Bonnie” Baker. Until age 9, he attended schools in rural Idaho. In 1938, his parents purchased Bingham Springs (later to become the Bar M Ranch), where Gene and his sister, Ginna, rode on horseback 7 miles both ways Baker to the Gibbon school. He graduated from Pendleton High School in 1945 and shortly after enlisted in the Navy, serving on the USS Hanna in both World War II and the Korean War. Between his stints in the Navy, he attended Cal Tech and Eastern Oregon College, where he was active in the rodeo circuits. After his discharge from the Navy, Gene returned to work at the ranch where he met the love of his life, Hope Vallentyne, who came as a guest one summer. They were married at the ranch on April 5, 1952, and worked side by side for nearly 50 years while also raising their children there. He often spent the morn- ings shoeing horses and then heading to the kitchen to bake his famous bread and cinnamon rolls in the afternoons. Gene enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards at the Elks, watching M*A*S*H reruns and was well-known for his Sunday fried chicken, the beautiful raspberries he grew and later for the cracked walnuts he would share with family and friends. After Hope’s passing in 2002, Gene later moved to Pendleton, where his final years were spent. Gene is survived by his four children, Dan Baker (Cherise), Sally Schlect (Kurt), Jerry (Elsa) and Tom (Patti); nine grand- children, Sarah, Donny, Becky, Casey, Wendy, Eric, Randi, Jimmy and Melina; two great-grandchildren, Jack and Teddy. He is also survived by his friend, Cathy. Gene was preceded in death by his parents, beloved wife, Hope; first- born son, Jimmy; and his sister, Virginia “Ginna” MacDonald. Special thanks to the compassionate staffs at Sun Ridge and Suttle Care for the loving care they gave Gene during the time he resided there in his later years. Maria “Aunt Ree” Llona was born in Ontario, Oregon, to Samuel and Mary Llona. She graduated from Ontario High School in 1970. “Go Tigers.” She lived in Florida, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Eugene, Oregon, before settling in the Pendleton area where she lived Llona most of her life. She was manager of Prison Industries for the Eastern Oregon Correctional Institute. There, she over saw the production of the “Prison Blues” line of blue jeans. She retired from the Oregon Department of Corrections in 2014. She was an accomplished seamstress. She made and sold hand-sewn clothes, knitted sweaters and did alterations for clothing stores before going to work for ODC. Along the way roller-skated competitively, Page 5A learned to play a wonderful Spanish Guitar, spun her own yarn for sweaters and collected glass orbs. She loved her cats, a good book or Downton Abbey & Master- piece Theater. She is survived by her brother, Thomas Llona of Portland, Oregon; nephews, Dean Maltsberger of Salt Lake City, Utah; Ryan Cowgill of Fruitland, Idaho; Samuel Llona of Portland, Oregon; and nieces, Pamela Chandler of Salt Lake City, Utah; Robin Davis of Nampa, Idaho; Andrea Guadagno of Graham, Wash- ington; and Tori Wilson of Ontario, Oregon. Her mother and father, Mary and Santos “Sam” Llona; sister, Gail Malts- berger; brother, David Samuel Llona, and his son, David Llona; preceded her in death. Wohlcke Adams April 15, 1945-Feb. 6, 2017 Richard Emil Wohlcke of Adams, Oregon, died on Feb. 6, 2017, in Richland, Wash- ington. He was 71 years old. He was born April 15, 1945, to William and Roberta (Marcum) Wohlcke. He lived in Pendleton and Adams, Oregon. He attended school in Pendleton and later went to Blue Mountain Community College where he earned his AA (two-year degree). He served in the Wohlcke U.S. Army as a medic in Vietnam. He was a logger and truck driver. He loved to fish and camp. He loved his family and enjoyed family gather- ings. He was a member of the NRA. He is survived by spouse, Janet Fessler of Adams, Oregon. He was preceded in death by his father, William Wohlcke; mother, Roberta Wohlcke; and brother, Billy Wohlcke.
