With the announcement in the morning that Governor Withycombe would sign the bone-dry law at 4 o’clock and that orders sent up until that hour could be filled, many hurried to the telegraph office to put their final two-quart orders on the wire. So many were received that Manager Dalrymple of the local office had to get addi- tional help to send the messages. 50 Years Ago From the East Oregonian Feb. 3, 1967 Wheat farmer Leonard Lorenzen said he did a triple take Thursday morning when he looked out his kitchen window toward the swimming pool and saw a yearling steer’s head sticking up through the pool’s cover. After he had collected his thoughts, Lorenzen, who farms about 15 miles northwest of Pendleton, went out to rescue the critter. “I took the cover off. The steer had his front feet on the safety ledge, but his back feet were treading water at the eight foot level.” Lorenzen shooed him to the shallow end where the steer promptly scrambled out. “Outside of being mighty cold I think that steer enjoyed his morning dip,” Lorenzen said. 25 Years Ago From the East Oregonian Feb. 3, 1992 A vehicle owned by Michele A. Burns of Stanfield is a complete loss after burning Monday afternoon in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 84 west of Pendleton. Burns was flagged over by passing motorists, who told her the vehicle was ablaze. Oregon State Police reported Burns escaped without injury. After almost reaching the scene, firefighters from Pendleton discovered they could not respond. The burning car was located just outside the department’s jurisdiction. The Echo Fire Department responded, but the 1986 Oldsmobile was a total loss.
