Page 6A COMMUNITY East Oregonian Wednesday, February 1, 2017 HERMISTON Accounts set up to help raise money for longtime Hermiston volunteer Laurie Ball-Kiser buried in medical bills By TAMMY MALGESINI East Oregonian Laurie Ball-Kiser has given of her time, talents and resources for more than 40 years. The Herm- iston woman is now in need of help from the community. “She has been a huge part of the community,” said Karen Snyder. “We are hoping people will step up and help her.” Snyder, who helped set up a benefit account for Ball-Kiser, said a couple of strokes and other health problems have resulted in a pile of medical bills. While insurance paid a portion of the costs, Ball-Kiser and her husband, Joe, are facing more than $20,000 in medical debt. A substitute teacher in Herm- iston and Umatilla schools for more than 30 years, Ball-Kiser also is the driving force behind the Community Fellowship Dinner in Hermiston. Coordinating the free meals on Thanksgiving and Christmas, Ball-Kiser is a firm believer that people should be able to share a nice holiday meal with others. Over the years, Ball-Kiser has been recognized for her efforts — in 2014, she received the Christmas Spirit Award from the Good Shepherd Community Health Foundation and then- mayor Bob Severson recognized Ball-Kiser with the Mayor’s Award during the 2009 Hermiston Chamber Distinguished Citizens Awards Banquet. Ball-Kiser is always quick to point out that the twice-yearly meals are the result of a lot of people pitching in. While she coordinates the effort, it wouldn’t be possible about the hundreds of volunteers that help. “Without the community involvement, we couldn’t continue to provide a place for people to share a meal with others,” she said in a past interview with the East Oregonian. “It’s truly a blessing to be able to do this.” People can provide financial support to Ball-Kiser in three ways: •A GoFundMe link at www. gofundme.com/laurie-ballkis- er-benefit-fund •Make a donation by check or cash via the Laurie Ball-Kiser Benefit Fund at Columbia River Bank, 1033 S. Highway 395, Hermiston. •Drop off cash or checks made out to the Laurie Ball-Kiser Benefit Fund at the Chuckwagon Cafe, 81027 N. Highway 395, Hermiston. For more information, contact Snyder at karenjeansnyder@ charter.net. ——— Contact Tammy Malgesini at tmalgesini@eastoregonian.com or 541-564-4539 File photo Laurie Ball-Kiser, left, coordinates the twice-yearly Community Fellowship Dinner during Thanksgiving and Christmas. Benefit accounts have been set up to help the Hermiston woman with recent medical expenses not covered by insurance. Wednesday Morning COMMUNITY BRIEFS PORTLAND — People from all backgrounds and levels of experience, who are interested in facilitating conversations to get people talking, listening and connecting to one another, are encouraged to contact Oregon Humanities. The Conversation Project brings Oregonians together to talk — across differences, beliefs and backgrounds — about important and challenging issues and ideas. Facilitators are provided training by Oregon Humanities. The goal is to connect people to discuss, while not pushing a specific agenda. Conversation leaders receive a $250 honorarium, mileage reimbursement and a meal stipend for each program they facilitate. Additional information, HERMISTON — Area youths are invited to register for the upcoming Children’s Community Theater. Sponsored by Hermiston Desert Arts Council, the class will present “The Poisoned Apple.” When Queen Durnella invites world leaders to a Peace Conference, her intent is to beguile them with her beauty. Only Snow White’s beauty stands in her way — and so begins the story behind the famous tale by the Brothers Grimm. Youths ages 9-18 are invited to participate. The program runs from Feb. 28 through May 12. Rehearsals are Tuesday and Wednesdays from 5:15-7:15 p.m. at the Hermiston Conference Center, 415 S. Highway 395. The cost is $50 for residents of Hermiston and $63 for non-residents. The registration deadline is Friday, Feb. 24. To register, call 541-667- 5018.
