Participants will perform during halftime of the Friday, Feb. 3 varsity boys basketball game at Hermiston. The clinic is Feb. 1-2 from 6-7:15 p.m. in the Main Commons at Hermiston High School, 600 S. First St. The cost is $30, which includes a T-shirt and instruction for cheers, chants, jumps and a dance. Registration is Monday Jan. 30 from 5-6 p.m. in the commons. (541-966-0380) 6 AM STATION (25) COMING EVENTS The Athena Chamber of Commerce First Citizens Banquet honored Athena Mayor John Shafer and long- time resident Paula Babb as the town’s First Citizens of 2016. The annual event was Jan. 16 at the Athena Baptist Church, where three Weston- McEwen High School seniors received awards for Youth Citizens of the Year: Sara von Borstel, Kellen Fairchild, and Michael Shafer, the mayor’s son. Each high schooler has a GPA above 4.0, according to Weston-McEwen principal Rollie Marshall, and is active in multiple school and community activities. Von Borstel is a member of the National Honor Society, earned varsity letters in volleyball and basketball and was the 2016 Player of the State Volleyball Game. He also helps friends and the elderly in the community. Fairchild also is a National Honor Society member, plays multiple sports and earned 50-plus college credits. He also sings in the Athe- na-Weston Choir and is active in church youth groups. And Michael Shafer is the high school student body president, an FFA and 4-H member and a Umatilla 4-H Ambassador, where he helps the Umatilla County Fair. He also challenged himself to graduate high school with an associate of arts transfer degree from Blue Mountain Community College. Tuesday Morning PBS ABC NBC CBS FOX introductory sports program for children ages 3-5 is offered through Pendleton Parks & Recreation. Sports Development for Preschoolers costs $30 for each child/parent pair and is due by Wednesday. The class begins with a 45-minute parent orientation Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Pendleton Recreation Center, 510 S.W. Dorion Ave. With a focus on throwing, catching, batting and kicking, the program prepares children for organized sports, in a fun, non-threatening environment. PBS ABC NBC CBS FOX PENDLETON — A food drive sponsored by the Pendleton Public Library also will serve to erase fines owed to the library. Food for Fines started Monday and runs through Saturday. Library patrons can donate non-perishable food items in exchange for reducing library fines. For each item donated, $1 will be credited to the library patron’s overdue charges or fines — up to $5. FOX Food for Fines benefits area needy East Oregonian CBS PENDLETON — The public is invited to the annual membership meeting of Blue Mountain Wildlife. The gathering will include an overview of 2016 and a peek at plans for 2017. The event is Saturday at 1 p.m. at the First Christian Church, 215 N. Main St., Pendleton. Refreshments will be served. Those attending should enter through the Baily Avenue door. The mission of Blue Mountain Wildlife’s is to preserve wildlife and the habitats in which they live.
