SPORTS Tuesday, January 24, 2017 East Oregonian Page 3B Prep Swimming Hermiston boys win Hood River meet, Pendleton second East Oregonian HOOD RIVER — Herm- iston’s boys swim team made it two-for-two on the season by winning the Hood River Invite on Saturday. A week after tying Pend- leton to win both team’s first meet of the season last week, the Bulldogs surged to the top of the podium with 471 points at Hood River. Pendleton was a distant second with 277, and they were followed by Hood River with 263 and The Dalles with 225. Hood River won the girls’ meet with 619, Pendleton was second with 493, The Dalles was third with 388 and Herm- iston was fourth with 164. Hermiston’s win again came with a strong showing from its relays as it placed second and third in both the 200-yard medley and free- style, and second and fifth in the 400 freestyle to score 194 team points. Hermiston scored the bulk of its points by placing several swimmers in each individual event, though. Points were awarded down to 16th place. Taking first for the Bull- dogs was Carson Wrathall in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2:04.53. He also was second in the 100 free (54.78) and Ryan Barnard placed second in two events, the 100 butterfly (59.84) and 100 backstroke (1:05.01.) Pendleton’s boys didn’t have the amount of placers to compete with the Bulldogs, but brought back more event wins. The 400 relay team of Rylan Headley, Avery Madril, Shane Miltenberger and Jon Jennings won in a time of 3:46.46 and each swimmer placed first or second in an individual swim as well. Jennings won the 100 butterfly (56.62) and 100 backstroke (57.24), Headley won the 100 breaststroke (1:13.85), and Miltenberger won the 500 freestyle (5:37.46) while placing second in the 200 freestyle (1:06.31). Madril placed second in the 200 individual medley (2:30.68). Pendleton’s girls won two events as Sam Schmitz touched the wall first in the 100 freestyle (1:00.90) and Landry Huth won the 200 freestyle (2:19.08). Placing second for the Lady Bucks were Schmitz in the 50 freestyle (26.90), Olivia Broker in the 500 freestyle (7:05.75) and 100 breaststroke (1:19.96), Oceane Schreier in the 200 individual medley (2:43.62) and the 200 freestyle relay team of Schreier, Janessa Headley, Huth and Schmitz (1:58.22). Pendleton and Hermiston will be back in the pool on Saturday at a meet in La Grande. Monday’s Prep Roundup Greb scores 17 to lead Buckaroos girls in non-league action East Oregonian at La Grande that tips off at 7 p.m. ——— PENDLETON — The Bucka- roos overcame early foul trouble to beat Baker 62-49 on Monday in a non-league game that had been rescheduled from earlier this season. Haley Greb led the way with 17 points and every player that got in the game scored for Pendleton (5-5). Maureen Davies added 10 points, and Katie Bradt had a big contribution off the bench with seven points and a team-high nine rebounds. Pendleton coach Kevin Porter said Bradt was seeing more time than usual because starting post Kalan McGlothan was in foul trouble the whole game and finished with just four points. “It was a big team win, every- body that played scored and so I couldn’t be more happy about that,” Porter said. Pendleton led 32-31 at halftime and opened the second half on a 10-0 run. From there Porter said it was all about maintaining their defensive pressure, and Baker (12-4) never pulled even the rest of the way. Kaeli Flanagan led the Bulldogs with 18 points. BURNS 39, UMATILLA 36 — At Umatilla, the Vikings were ahead by one point with 1:02 left in the game but senior Lindsey Taylor hit a go-ahead three-pointer and Burns held on for the Eastern Oregon League win on Monday night. Umatilla (6-11, 1-3 EOL) was led by a double-double from Aleesha Watson with 18 points and 14 rebounds, and Luaryn Journot added 10 points and four assists. The teams will meet again on Friday when Umatilla play at Burns with a 5 p.m. tip-off. IRRIGON 64, VALE 46 — At Irrigon, coming off a stretch in which they’d lost four of five, the Knights got a big boost of confidence by knocking off No. 8 Vale on Monday in Eastern Oregon League play. Jada Burns scored a game-high 23 points, Ana Zacarias added a double-double with 12 points and 11 steals, and Alyia Munoz came off the bench to contribute 16 points and five rebounds for Irrigon (8-7, 1-2 EOL). “We played with a lot of energy and confidence tonight, and it was a huge win for our team,” said Irrigon coach Mike Royer. “To knock off a team like Vale is what we needed at this point in the season.” Abby Hamilton paced Vale (11-3, 1-1) with 21 points. BOYS BASKETBALL LA GRANDE 65, HERM- ISTON 37 — At La Grande, the Bulldogs were never able to find a rhythm and were routed in non-league play on Monday night. “It was our ugliest game of the year,” said Hermiston coach Casey Arstein. “La Grande jumped on us early and gave us a little mid-season wake-up call.” No Bulldogs reach double-digits as Hunter Walls and Andrew James led Hermiston (10-4) with eight points each. Andrew Peasly scored 20 to lead La Grande (14-1), and Gabe Hanson hit four three-pointers to finish with 14. Hermiston is the only to beat La Grande this season (62-54 in Hermiston on Jan. 14), but may have gotten caught looking forward in its schedule. Umatilla (12-5, 4-0 EOL) took a 29-16 lead into the locker room at halftime, and was led in the game by Kaden Webb with 18 points. Sebastian Garcia and Tyrone Morris each added 11 points.
