(AP) — A scientist in California has named a newly discovered moth species after President-elect Donald Trump, saying the white and yellow scales on the insect’s head are reminiscent of Trump’s blond hairdo. The moth was named Neopalpa donadltrumpi by evolutionary biologist Dr. Vazrick Nazari, who discovered it while dissecting moths and noticing that three specimens had a distinct wing pattern and unique DNA profile, the Sacramento Bee reported Wednesday. He chose the name in part to bring awareness to fragile habitats that may contain undiscovered species. The moths have been found in two Southern California counties, where urban growth is threatening its habitat, according to the research article. Naming newly discovered species after famous people is nothing new. Nash made 491 of those round trips last year — more than 2,000 over the past four years — and considers himself somewhat of an expert on driving the infamous Cabbage Hill, which already this winter has claimed three lives in two accidents involving trucks. The fatal crashes, and others that have caused injuries, have prompted state officials to consider ways to slow truck traffic under extreme weather conditions. Nash doesn’t blame the mountain. Rather, he blames the weather and drivers who are unfamiliar with the prevalent winter conditions on the notorious stretch of Interstate 84 though the Blue Mountains. January 22, 2017 Movies AFTERNOON CBS 100 Years Ago From the East Oregonian Jan. 21-22, 1917 Dental office thieves, presumably the same who have operated recently in other parts of eastern Oregon and Washington, robbed the offices of four Pendleton dentists Saturday night and also robbed the office of the Temple theater. Gold used for filling teeth to the value of approximately $100 was stolen from the dentists while the Temple theater lost between $94 and $100 in cash. Access in each case was gained by the use of a jimmy and the job was neatly done in each instance. All of the gold in the work tables of the dentists was taken but no attempt was made to open the safes. It has not been long since the office of practically every dentist in Walla Walla was robbed and it is said dental offices in Spokane and Baker have also been robbed recently. 50 Years Ago From the East Oregonian Jan. 21-22, 1967 The long session of the Pendleton bypass committee had its lighter moments as this suggestion was made: Erect a big “Howdy pardner” sign at the edge of town, and replace the stodgy “gas, food, lodging” signs with others that read “wine, women and song.” Rounding out the 6 AM STATION NBC DAYS GONE BY Sunday Morning ABC Though most of the male inmates at the Umatilla County Jail towered over and tried to intimidate her, Gard said she was never assaulted by any of them, avoiding physical altercations by relying on her “silver tongue” to get her out of tense situations. And Gard believes women are more likely to use intuition and communication skills during confrontations with inmates. Sheriff John Trumbo rewarded Gard’s decades of service to the county by nominating her for a statewide award. In January of 1998, after 27 years with the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office, Lt. Marie Gard was named Oregon Community Corrections’ 1997 Supervisor of the Year. Gard remained with the sheriff’s office until her retirement in December 1998. She continued working as a part-time security guard at the Umatilla County Courthouse in Pendleton for another 17 years before retiring for good in February 2016 — a career spanning 45 years under nine different sherrifs. ■ Renee Struthers is the community records editor for the East Oregonian. See the complete collection of Out of the Vault columns at eovault.blogspot.com PBS M arie Gard is a pioneer when it comes to Umatilla County law enforcement. “The Gard,” as she was affectionately known during her career with the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office, was the first woman hired as a correctional officer at the Umatilla County Jail. Her dedication to the sheriff’s office earned statewide recognition in January of 1998. Gard began her law enforcement career in 1971 when she was hired as a dispatcher. She learned about the job from a Pendleton police detective who investigated after she was held up at gunpoint at the local Western Union office, where she was the manager. When the office closed, the detective encouraged Gard to apply with the sheriff’s office. The diminutive Gard, who stands just under 5 feet tall, maintained a gentle demeanor until she was attacked by a female inmate she was booking into the jail. She then learned self-defense tactics from her male coworkers. Gard’s work ethic so impressed Sheriff Jim Carey she was offered a correctional officer position in 1981 — and she did her job so well Carey was encouraged to hire more women at the jail.
