Workers there measured radiation levels seven times higher than reported in the shipping manifest. Energy Northwest spokesman Mike Paoli says that though the radioactivity of the source was higher than on the manifest, the dose received by those handling the shipment remained well below the workplace safety standards. The commission says there was no undue risk to the public, but a transpor- tation accident could have potentially exposed people to excessive radiation levels. A three-member inspection team will spend this week at the plant near Richland. Hearing in Logan Kitzhaber crash pushed to 2017 LINCOLN CITY (AP) — An attorney for Logan Kitzhaber has been granted more time to investigate evidence from the traffic crash that resulted in the teenager facing criminal charges. The Oregonian/ OregonLive reports the son of former Gov. John Kitzhaber attended Monday's court hearing in Lincoln County. His attorney, Ben Eder, told Judge Sheryl Bachart that three weeks would be plenty of time and agreed to next appear with his client on Jan. 17. Kitzhaber's car struck a motorhome on the Fourth of July after trying to pass another vehicle on U.S. 101 north of Lincoln City. Kitzhaber and a couple traveling in the motorhome were injured. Gov. Kate Brown said at a Monday news conference that 270,000 Oregonians were registered to vote under the so-called motor-voter program. She said more than 97,000 of them cast ballots in November. Under the year-old program, Oregonians of legal age are automatically registered to vote when they apply for or renew a driver's license or state ID. So why the hazelnuts? Secretary of State Jeanne P. Atkins said they represent Oregonians registered under motor-voter and that both hazelnuts and the registration program are Oregon icons. She said she hopes that other states adopt the voter registration program. She said the nuts are on loan and that her staff isn't going to eat them. Gabriel said the government is in talks with a lawyer for Flores, who was a much lesser figure in the standoff than Payne. The government has yet to respond to O’Shaughnessy’s motion. In addition to the breakdown of the Nevada plea deal, Schwartz pointed to new information discovered after O’Shaughnessy’s Aug. 1 change of plea, such as the extent to which the govern- ment used confidential informants. Prosecutors in Nevada have described O’Shaughnessy as a midlevel organizer of the confrontation at Cliven Bundy’s ranch. The defendants there are accused of conspiring to assault federal officials who were rounding up Bundy’s cattle over unpaid grazing fees. O’Shaughnessy believes the case against him in Nevada is weak, Schwartz wrote. State crime lab scientist sentenced to 3 years in prison BEND (AP) — A federal judge sentenced a fired forensic scientist at the Oregon State Police crime labs Monday to three years in prison for stealing hundreds of pills from evidence submitted to the lab over two years, causing the state to re-evaluate over 2,500 drug cases statewide. Nika Larsen, 36, was sentenced after pleading guilty in August to two counts of obtaining a controlled substance by misrepresentation, fraud and deception, The Oregonian/ OregonLive reported. Her sentence also includes 250 hours of community service as part of supervised release following her prison time. Larsen used her position to steal methamphetamine, morphine and other drugs while processing and over- seeing cases, the U.S. Attor- ney’s Office said. Deschutes County District Attorney John Hummel wrote to the court that Larsen violated her position of trust “on a massive scale unprecedented in Oregon history.” An investigation found Larsen took the pills in Umatilla County between December 2013 and November 2014 and in Deschutes County between November 2014 and September 2015. She began working for the state in 2007. Oregon State Police launched an investigation in 2015 after a forensic scien- tist in the Bend lab found 18 oxycodone pills were missing. Investigators found some pills were missing, partially missing or had been replaced with non-controlled substances — all in cases handled by Larsen. Larsen told the judge Monday she wanted to express her deep “regret and shame.” “What started as a perceived easy and painless means of escaping my past and agonizing daily life turned into egregious acts that deeply impacted my friends, family and colleagues in the law enforcement and the legal community,” she wrote in a Dec. 6 letter to the judge that she read in court. Larsen suffered from substance abuse during the year before her arrest, according to her plea agree- ment.
