SPORTS Friday, December 9, 2016 East Oregonian Page 3B Rodeo BLAZERS: Blue Mountain alums earn more money Continued from 1B because of injuries, took over down the stretch. The guard scored on a 19-footer with 34 seconds left, then converted two pairs of free throws in the last 20 seconds. CJ McCollum led the Trail Blazers with 24 points, and Damian Lillard had 19 on 6-of-18 shooting. Evan Turner had 15 points and 10 rebounds. Portland held a 79-68 lead after Al-Farouq Aminu scored inside with 5:28 left. But Memphis clicked off a 14-2 rally and it settled into a one-possession contest. Tony Allen had 15 points and 10 rebounds for Memphis. Shooting issues that plagued both teams in the first half, spread past intermission as each started 4 of 14 from the field. That helped Portland maintain its lead after carrying a 50-43 eper advantage into halftime. ng in Despite converting only 5 of 20 shots in the third, Portland actually extended its lead, entering the fourth with a 69-61 advantage. The Portland lead would reach 13 again in the fourth and was still at 11 when Memphis started its rally behind Gasol, who had nine straight points for the Grizzlies. Portland had a previous 13-point lead in the second quarter as every Grizzly but Gasol was suffering shooting woes. Gasol managed 19 points in the half, while Portland got 15 points each from McCollum and Lillard. HARKLESS HURT Portland forward Maurice Harkless did not play because of a left ankle sprain suffered in the latter stages of the Portland’s 115-107 loss at Milwaukee on Wednesday night. “I remember him wincing. He was on the free throw line,” Blazers coach Terry Stotts said. “It was late in the game, like the last 2 minutes.” NOTHING FREE Both teams struggled from the free throw line. Portland made 29 of 40 in the game while Memphis was 20 of 30. East Oregonian o LAS VEGAS — Former Blue Mountain Community College rodeo cowboys R.C. Landingham and Dakota Eldridge both earned checks again on Friday at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, although for much smaller amounts than their wins brought on Thursday at Thomas and Mack Arena. Landingham scored 84 points in bareback on Powder River Rodeo’s Craig At Midnight to tie for sixth in the eighth round, and Eldridge was sixth in steer wrestling with a time of 5.3 seconds. Eldridge, who jumped up to fourth in the aggregate with 44.2 on eight head, took a check for $4,231 as he looks to close the gap between himself and world No. 6 Ty Erickson. Landingham pocketed half that as he split his winnings with world No. 3 bareback rider Tanner Aus. Landingham enters tonight’s penul- timate performance at the NFR in sixth place in the world and less than $10,000 behind No. 5 Jake Vold, who has won three rounds this week. On Thursday it was world No. 2 Orin Larsen taking home top honors after an 87.5 on Frontier Rodeo’s Full Baggage. World leader Tim O’Con- nell held onto his NFR lead in the aggregate and has 675 on eight head after scoring 85 on J Bar J’s Straight Jacket. In steer wrestling, BMCC alum Dakota Eldridge slipped to sixth in the go-round with a time of 5.3 seconds, which still gave him a decent check for $4,321. Eldridge’s time did bump him up to fourth in the average standings with 44.2 on eight head. Also, Mount Vernon’s Trevor Knowles finished fourth with a 4.6 second time and a check for $11,000. Clayton Hass won the round with a time of 4.1 seconds, and Tyler Waguespack sits atop the world standings with $210,676 in earnings. Local roper Garrett Rogers and team roping partner Jake Minor couldn’t keep their momentum going from the previous two nights, regis- tering a no time in Thursday’s perfor- mance. Rogers remains in ninth place in the world standings, while Minor is 10th. Meanwhile, Oregon cowboy Russell Cardoza and partner Dustin Bird took first with a time of 3.7 and a check for $26,231. Cardoza and Bird sit sixth in the average standings with a time of 35.1 on six, and both sit in second place in the world standings as well. Saddle bronc riding on Thursday saw a Wright shoot to the top, as Cody Wright rode Powder River Rodeo’s Lipstick N Whiseky for 88 points to earn the $26,231 prize. Jacobs Crawley scored an 81 on Sweatin Bullets, but missed out on the money for the round, though he still maintains a sizeable cushion on Ryder Wright atop the world standings. Louisiana cowboy Shane Hanchey edged out world No. 3 roper Matt Shiozawa for the tie-down roping prize on Thursday, finishing in 6.8 seconds and just 0.3 seconds ahead of Shiozawa. The win also put Hanchey within $3,000 of Shiozawa for the No. 3 spot in the world standings, and just over $36,000 behind No. 1 spot in Marcos Costa. Riley Pruitt roped his calf in 8.4 seconds on Thursday, which was enough to keep him atop the average standings. Another Oregon competitor put on a show on Thursday night, as Keizer cowgirl Amberleigh Moore won the barrel racing performance with a time of 13.37 seconds — which tied the arena record. Moore’s win vaulted her to third place in the world stand- ings and second place in the average. And finishing up the night in bull- riding Tyler Smith held onto Cooper’s Comet long enough to score an 89-point ride to win the performance, one of only two riders to record a score on Thursday. Brennon Eldred finished second with 71.5 points. Smith’s win pushed him up to fifth in the average and into the top 10 in the world standings. The WNFR continues tonight with the ninth performance at 6:45 p.m. SCOREBOARD Local Slate PREP BOYS BASKETBALL Today’s Games Arlington vs. Grant Union (at Columbia River Clash, Umatilla), 10:30 a.m. Irrigon vs. Crane (at Heppner Kick Off), ccd.
