ith the Irrigon Knights moving up to 3A this
season and the Heppner Mustangs having
to replace three of five starters, the CBC
looks to be Stanfield’s to lose in 2016-17. The Tigers
return all five starters from last year’s team that just
missed out on the playoffs following a close loss to
Irrigon at districts. Weston-McEwen and Pilot Rock
are also expected to be much-improved this season
with numerous starters and all-league players
coming back as well. The league has two automatic
playoff berths up for grabs again this year.

On defense: Depending on their match-up, the
Mustangs will switch between man-to-man and zone.
Rosenbalm’s expectations: “With several new starters
this season, it may take us awhile to figure out who we
are as a team. The returning players have seen lots of
time and experience from past success, but it may take
time for players to figure out their role on the team.
I believe we will develop into a team that makes the
postseason and will have some success. We will have to
be ready to go each night because there are really good
teams in our league.”
2015-16 finish: 21-5, 8-2 CBC (The Mustangs won the
district title 50-45 over Irrigon, then advanced to the
state tournament final bracket in Pendleton. Their season
ended short of a trophy with a 49-29 loss to Burns.)
