As the suspect held a little girl as a human shield, his movements exposed him to a sheriff’s marksman who targeted him through a window and killed him with a shot to the head, allowing the 8-year-old girl to break free from his grasp and run to safety, authorities disclosed Friday about the killing of Bruce R. Johnson in Tacoma. “Once we were able to assess that the kids were still alive, it went into play,” sher- iff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said of the SWAT team’s plan to end the standoff in a suburban neighborhood south of Seattle. “He had a choice to put the guns down. We weren’t about to let those kids get hurt.” The standoff began after Police Officer Reginald “Jake” Gutierrez, 45, was fatally shot Wednesday night when he and his partner went into the house to investigate a domestic violence call. Gutierrez’s partner returned fire and helped get Johnson’s wife safely out of the house. Other officers came under fire as they worked their way into the house and pulled Gutierrez out. He later died in surgery. Police will escort his body to a funeral home on Friday. The 17-year veteran officer is survived by three daughters and a grand- daughter. PUBLIC SAFETY LOG THURSDAY 3:35 a.m. - A Hermiston man told police he might look like a burglar but wasn’t one. The caller said he locked himself out of his home on Southwest 11th Street and was wearing black pants and gray-and-black hooded sweatshirt in case the neighbors call and reported someone was breaking in. 5:36 a.m. - Oregon State Police and other agencies responded to a crash on the westbound side of Interstate 84 near milepost 182. The driver, a 45-year-old woman from Stanfield, told police she saw something in the road, tried to miss the object and lost control of her Accura RDX, which slid off the highway, hit the south shoulder and rolled one-and-a- half times before ending up on its roof. Information indicated the driver was injured but did not specify to what extent. 9:05 a.m. - An Irrigon man reported his brother may have been involved with stealing $400 from him on Thanksgiving. 10:44 a.m. - Thieves stole propane tanks from Drakes RV Services, 4701 N.W. A Ave., Pendleton. 11:05 a.m. - Hermiston police received a request from a doctor to check on the welfare of a mother and her newborn child because the mother appears confused. 11:10 a.m. - A Pilot Rock woman reported she found a pink hunter ribbon tied around the post of her mailbox and last night a diesel pickup stopped in front of her driveway. She said she was concerned the ribbon could be a marker for someone to break into the house. 11:11 a.m. - A former employee of Keystone RV Co., Pendleton, picked up another employee’s check without permission. 2:43 p.m. - Dave Williams, principal of Sunridge Middle School, Pendleton, reported video shows an adult at the school Wednesday night stole a backpack. 3:12 p.m. - Hermiston police warned a Chihuahua owner after a caller on Northeast Sixth Street reported the dog bit his 12-year-old girl and ripped her jeans. 3:47 p.m. - A father reported his son in Boardman let an ex-girlfriend borrow the car and she has not brought it back. 6:16 p.m. - A deliver yperson for the Tri-City Herald news- paper reported the theft of the company’s sale rack from the Eastside Market, 582 E. Main St, Hermiston. 6:58 p.m. - A woman on North Golda Road, Hermiston, reported her 40-year-old son was threatening her. ARRESTS, CITATIONS •A caller at 2:15 p.m. identified a man who was stripping one of his vehicle at a residence on the 200 block of Lena Drive, Stanfield. The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office arrested the suspect, Kevin Haskell Bond, 44, no address provided, for second-degree trespass, first-degree theft and third-de- gree criminal mischief.
