The Chicago Cubs are World Series champions. Ending more than a century of fl ops, futility and frustration, the Cubs won their fi rst title since 1908, outlasting the Cleveland Indians 8-7 in 10 innings of a Game 7 thriller early Thursday. Lovable losers for generations, the Cubs nearly let this one get away, too. All-Star closer Aroldis Chapman blew a three-run lead with two outs in the eighth when Rajai Davis hit a tying homer. But the Cubs, after tormenting their fans one more time, came right back after a 17-minute rain delay before the top of the 10th. Ben Zobrist hit an RBI double and Miguel Montero singled home a Game 7 Chicago Cleveland 8 7 run to make it 8-6. Davis delivered an RBI single with two outs in the bottom half, but Mike Montgomery closed it out, and the celebration was on. HERMISTON Bulldogs advance to quarterfi nals Hermiston nets fi ve in second half to coast past Ashland By ERIC SINGER East Oregonian For the second straight year, the Hermiston Bulldogs are into the quarterfi nals of the 5A state playoffs. Hermiston overcame a 1-0 fi rst half defi cit and exploded for fi ve goals in the fi nal 30 minutes Boys Soccer of play to send home the Ashland Grizzlies 5-1 in a fi rst round playoff game on Wednesday at Kennison Ashland Stadium. “It was great feeling,” Hermiston senior Gio Madrigal said of the victory. “We felt good and it gives us high hopes for next game Hermiston too, it let’s us know we’re never out of it.” Wednesday’s game played out similarly to Saturday’s play-in game against Sandy did — a slow start with a big fi nish. Hermiston (12-3-1) controlled the ball for much of the half and developed several scoring chances near the net, but came up empty each time. In one particularly impressive stretch he turned away shots from close range in the 36th, 37th and 39th minutes. “(Webster) was really good, in the fi rst half we had many shots and he was just good,” senior Alejandro Llamas said. “Our key is pressure. That’s why we have the ability to keep going hard, hard, hard. We had many shots but we needed to fi nish.” See PIRATES/2B Sports shorts Turner resigns as Vikings OC EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) Vikings offensive coordinator Norv Turner abruptly resigned Wednesday, two days after Minnesota lost its second consecutive game. The Vikings have scored only 10 points in each of those losses after a 5-0 start to the season. Turner was replaced on an interim basis by Pat Shurmur. Turner said in several inter- views Wednesday that the decision stemmed from differing views with Zimmer about the direction of Turner the offense. “It just got to the point where I didn’t think it was going to work with me, so I removed myself,” Turner told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Turner has been a head coach in the NFL for 15 years. This was his 10th season as an offensive coordinator in the league. “I don’t know [anything] about Von Miller money. Nothing. Never heard of that. Never came out of my mouth ... I’m not Von Miller, just so you know. Let’s be smart now. Let’s use some common sense. “ — Jamie Collins The new Cleveland Brown spoke for the fi rst time about his trade from New England on Tuesday. Collins, who is a free agent after the season, was reportedly trad- ed because of his demands for a contract extension in the range of Von Miller’s deal with Denver. Mariners outright three players to Triple-A Tacoma SEATTLE (AP) The Seattle Mariners on Wednesday outrighted catcher Steve Clevenger and pitchers Charlie Furbush and Ryan Cook to Triple-A Tacoma, and claimed right-handed pitcher Ryan Weber off waivers from Atlanta. All three players sent to Tacoma have been on the 60-day disabled list and each has the right to choose free agency because of major league service time. Clevenger was suspended by the team in September for a series of tweets regarding a police shooting in Charlotte, North Carolina, and the Black Lives Matter move- ment. He was removed from the suspended list and placed on the 60-day DLon Oct. 31. Furbush is expected to be out until the 2018 season due to shoulder issues. Weber appeared in 16 games with Atlanta this season and was 1-1 with a 5.45 ERA.
