Vale leads the pack at 2-0, while Umatilla, Burns, Nyssa, and Irrigon all sit at 1-1. This week brings two of the biggest match-ups in the region as Umatilla hosts Vale on Friday night, and Irrigon hosts Nyssa. Both Umatilla and Irrigon need victories against their counterparts Friday to keep pace in the standings, and wins would also boost each team’s resume for Nelson said. “I was proud of the way the progressively got better as the match went on.” Brooke Smiley led Mac-Hi (1-10, 0-4 GOL) with three kills and added two digs and a block, while Alexxus Shelton pitched in four digs, one block and one ace. Anney Banek added a solid two ace, two assist, two block performance as well. Mac-Hi hits the court again on Tuesday when it hosts La Grande at 3 p.m. a possible at-large bid as well. And in Class 2A’s Columbia Basin Conference, Stanield and Heppner have all but wrapped up the league’s two playoff spots, and appear headed for a winner-take-all match-up next week in Heppner. The Mustangs have won the league in each of the past four seasons — two CBC, two in Blue Mountain Confer- ence — and have won 21 straight league games dating back to October 2012 when they dropped a game to Stanield.
