FAITH Friday, September 30, 2016 HERMISTON Members of Hermis- ton’s faith community are continuing their efforts to help heal the city after a shooting last month, this time with an afternoon of prayer. The event will be held Oct. 8 at 2 p.m. at Victory Square Park and include about an hour’s worth of prayer and speakers on topics such as strengthening families, strengthening the nation and preventing violence. “We want to be able to pray for the needs of the community, comfort those hurt by these tragedies and offer peace,” Pastor Hector Ramirez of the Templo De Fe Esperanza Y Amor said. The most far-reaching local tragedy he spoke of happened on Aug. 18, when Hermiston High School volunteer wrestling coach Jason Huston killed fellow coach Kenny Valdez and 14-year-old JJ Hurtado, wounded Hurtado’s mother Andria Bye and then killed himself. More than a month later, churches and other groups continue to organize memo- rial events, scholarship drives and other efforts to help the community heal from an incident that shocked the community and was quickly followed up by a second, non-fatal, shooting a week later near Butte Park. One of those healing efforts came Saturday, when about 70 Hermiston Assembly of God members put on red “I Love My City” T-shirts and performed acts of service including free car washes and handing out water at Butte Park. Ramirez said Hermiston Assembly of God, Desert Rose Ministries and other local churches will also be involved in the Oct. 8 prayer event hosted by Templo De Fe Esperanza Y Amor. “Several pastors are coming together,” he said. Ramirez said the pastors have been assigned various topics, such as family, nations, salvation, communi- ties and peace. The theme of the afternoon is “Pray for My Community.” The event is a local- ly-driven one, different than the National Day of Prayer or the recent See You at the Pole event that saw high school and middle school students across Umatilla County join hands in prayer around their schools’ lag poles before school on Wednesday. Everyone is welcome to the Pray for My Community event, which is expected to last between an hour to an hour and a half. Ramirez suggested people bring lawn chairs if they don’t wish to stand or sit on the ground the whole time. “We just want the commu- nity to know that we want to be comforting, and we want to meet their needs,” he said. You don’t get a lot of lowery proselytizing with Palau, Johns said. “His message is simple and direct,” Johns said. “It sinks into your heart.” In 1998, Johns found himself sitting beside Palau during a prayer breakfast in Washington, D.C. Even- tually, Johns got around to sharing his vision of Palau coming to Athena. “I told Luis ‘You’re supposed to come to Athena, Oregon,’” Johns said. “He just looked at me.” Over the next 18 years, Johns continued to call and email the Palau organization with the message that “Luis is supposed to come to Athena.” “Bob Johns has known Luis and the team for years,” said Colin James, a vice-president for the Palau organization. “He’s always kidded Luis that ‘someday you’re coming to Athena.’ Recently, he invited us again and this time it just kind of clicked with us.” Finally, in January, Johns inally got the oficial thumbs up. Palau will speak at 2 p.m., Oct. 15 at Weston-McEwen High School. A BMX bike demo will precede the evan- gelist’s message, starting at noon. The day before, Palau will meet with area pastors at a gathering in Walla Walla. Palau’s exec- utive assistant, Jane Stradley, has known Palau Palau for 50 years and worked for the organization for the last 27. She said the idea of the mega-evangelist going to Athena wasn’t outlandish. “It doesn’t matter the size,” Stradley said. “Whether its Central Park or Athena, it doesn’t matter.” She said the visit to such a tiny town isn’t the irst for Palau. The evangelist downsizes occasionally and has spoken in Lakeview, Parkdale and other small places in the region as part of Operation Paciic Northwest. “We wanted not to neglect our own backyard,” James said. Doing things on a smaller scale means some change in the model, but the message is the same. “Whether its New York City or Athena, Weston, Helix or Adams, it’s the same dynamics,” James said. Johns can’t wait. He’s like the proverbial little kid on Christmas morning. Luis Palau was meant to come to Athena and now he is. “I ask, ‘Why not?” he said. “Why not Athena?” He hopes people will ill the gym, which seats 800.
