Happ became the major leagues’ second 20-game winner and Russell Martin and Michael Saunders each hit a two-run homer, lifting the Toronto Blue Jays over the Seattle Mariners 10-2 on Tuesday night to move into irst in the AL wild-card race. Toronto took the lead with an eight-run fourth inning and moved a game ahead of Baltimore. Detroit remained 2 1/2 games behind the Blue Jays. Seattle lost for the fourth time in ive games and trail Toronto by four games. Happ (20-4) allowed two runs, six hits and a walk over ive innings, striking out eight while winning for the 14th time in his last 15 deci- sions. Josh Donaldson walked and Edwin Encarnacion capped the inning with a two-run double. Donaldson opened the sixth with his 35th homer and Encarnacion added an eighth-inning solo homer, his 42nd, for the inal two runs. The Mariners took a 2-0 lead in the third when Robinson Cano lined a two-run triple off the knee of second baseman Travis that caromed all the way into the right-ield corner. Shawn O’Malley reached on a one-out bunt single and moved to second when Travis couldn’t ind the handle on Guillermo Heredia’s inield single. Both runners advanced on a double steal and came home on Cano’s triple. TRAINING ROOM Mariners: RHP Taijuan Walker had no issues after taking a line drive off his pitching arm in the irst inning on Monday night. “He feels ine. There’s nothing there,” manager Scott Servais said. MARINERS AFFILIATE MOVES Seattle will have two new minor league afiliates in 2017. The Mariners announced a two-year agree- ment with the Arkansas Trav- elers in the Double-A Texas League and a four-year deal with the Modesto Nuts in the Class A California League. Arkansas replaces Jackson, which won the Southern League title. Modesto replaces Bakersield, which was contracted from the California League. Irrigon’s next game is Thursday when it hosts Umatilla at 5 p.m. Riverside (3-9, 1-1) will host non-league opponent Waitsburg (WA) on Thursday at 5 p.m. CULVER 3, WESTON- MCEWEN 1 — At Athena, TigerScots head coach Shawn White was expecting his team to give the visiting Bulldogs a run for their money, but came away wanting more after their Columbia Basin Conference opener went to Culver by scores of 25-15, 17-25, 25-19, 25-17. “Culver brings a ton of energy and they just wanted it a little bit more than we did tonight,” he said. “We’re going to have to execute better and we’re going to have to step up. “Culver did a good job and we’ve to improve to get up to their level.” No statistics were reported. ECHO 3, HELIX 1 — At Echo, the Cougars snagged their second Old Oregon League win of the day over the Grizzlies with scores of 25-22, 21-25, 25-18, 25-21. Hannah McCarty led Echo (15-3, 4-0 OOL) on the attack with 12 kills and ive aces, and Alyssa Ray added another 12 kills. Marti Huff inished with seven kills and three blocks. “We tried to keep (Helix) out of system as much as we could,” said Echo coach Janice Scott. “Our girls did a good job of if they couldn’t get a good attack, they’d set the ball deep to keep them out of system.” Helix (9-5, 1-2) was led by Sadie Wilson with nine kills, ive coming during their second-set win. Next up for Helix is a non-league home game against Elgin on Friday at 5 p.m. Echo will host league opponent Pine Eagle on Friday at 4 p.m. BOYS SOCCER IRRIGON 14, DAYTON (WA) 0 — At Irrigon, the Knights earned their third- straight shutout to open the season and cruised in a non-league win on Tuesday. Isaac Estrada scored four goals and added two assists, and the Knights (3-0) got two goals each from Alejandro Alvarez, Ruben Barrera and Pedro Maciel. The scoring started right away as Ruben Torres got them on the board in the second minute when he converted a header off a cross by Barrera, then Oscar Armenta made it 2-0 less than a minute later when he bounced a cross off the far post and in. Coach Paul Keefer said it was a classic team win with strong defense leading to good transitions and a well-balanced attack. “We found out what happens when we spread the ield, we make good passes and we play unselishly,” said Keefer.
