BULL RIDING When the reigning world champion and the hottest rider in the sport draws a bull that averages 82.17 points per ride for the Pendleton Round-Up short-go, a betting man knows exactly where to place his money. There’s never a sure thing in rodeo, but that no-brainer wager would have paid off Saturday when 22-year-old sensation Sage Steele Kimzey of Strong City, Oklahoma covered Burch Rodeo’s Wolf of Wall Street for 86.5 points to win the short-go and the aggregate title at the 106th Round-Up. Kimzey totaled 169.5 points on two bulls, half a point lower than he inished with during his win at the 105th Round-Up. “The victory laps at each of these big rodeos are just incredible, and it’s something that the feeling will never get old and it can never be replaced by anything else,” he said. “It’s something that I really cherish and I really love, getting to come out here and ride at these big rodeos and keep winning.” Kimzey was the irst rider to record a score in the short-go, and 10 of the 12 inalists left with nothing more than they came into the round with. ——— TEAM ROPING For the irst part of 2016, Ryan Reed did not have much time spent in rodeoing. The Wittman, Arizona resident was spending time shoeing horses at his home, until a buddy of his, Dalton Pearce of San Luis Opisbo, California said he wanted to make a run at the Resistol Rookie title in team roping. So the pair teamed up and started together at the Reno Rodeo in Nevada in mid-June and soon success followed. By September, Reed had worked his way to 29th in the world standings as a header, and Pearce had already climbed the rookie leader- board and sat at the top as a heeler. On Saturday the duo claimed their biggest win of the year by winning the team roping title with a time of 19.5 on three head. “I’ve been dreaming about winning a rodeo like this my whole life,” Reed said. “It feels awesome.” Reed and Pearce were the second-to-last team to rope on Saturday and had about as good a run as they could have hoped for, stopping the clock at 6.8 seconds to put them easily into irst. Hermiston native Jake Stanley and Benton City, Washington native Bucky Campbell needed at least a 7.2 to win, but inished with a 9.8 to place them fourth. ——— Bull riding First go payouts — 1. BARREL RACING It’s been a whirlwind week in what has turned into a dream season for Texas barrel racer Stevi Hillman, who carried her lead in barrel racing wire-to-wire to win the 106th Pendleton Round-Up. It’s also been a season of irsts for the Weatherford, Texas barrel racer, who took her irst ride across the expansive pattern during Monday’s slack and will appear in her irst Wrangler National Finals Rodeo at season’s end. “This is a dream come true. Just amazing,” said Hillman, who teamed with a mare on loan named Martini for 29.72 second in the inals and 59.4 on two. “I’m on my 5-year-old this year, amazing. I just can’t even describe how this feels. “It’s been a blessing. It’s been an amazing year.” With a steady drizzle moistening the grass just enough to cause some riders problems, Hillman secured her title on the inal stretch as her split time between the third barrel and the inish of 7.72 seconds was the fastest in the round. Pamela Capper of Cheney, Washington had the short-go’s top time at 29.69 and inished third in the aggregate with 59.7 on two. Defending Round-Up cham- pion Kimmie Wall placed third with 59.5 on two. ——— Barrel racing First round payouts — 1. Stevi Hillman, 29.64 seconds, $4,915; 2. Kimmie Wall, 29.77, $4,213; 3. So on Saturday at the 106th Pendleton Round-Up, TIE-DOWN ROPING East Oregonian photos by Kathy Aney, E.J. Harris and Rachel Owen BGINNING AT TOP AND MOVING CLOCKWISE: Ryan Reed and Dalton Pearce inish a championship team roping run Saturday at the Pendleton Round-Up. Stevi Hillman, from Weatherford, Texas was all smiles after winning the barrel racing. Nick Guy of Sparta, Wis., marks a 5.4-second time in steer wrestling. Tim O’Connell, of Zwingle, Iowa, score a championship 84-point ride in bareback. Tie-down roper Chase Williams, of Stephensville, Texas, ropes his calf in 9.4 seconds to nail down the championship. Jessie Wright turns in an 85.5-point championship ride in saddle bronc. Jesse went out and won one himself. The 27-year-old Wright scored an 85.5 point ride on Burch Rodeo’s Lunatic From Hell to give him a two-ride total of 170.5 points — edging out Cody DeMoss’ 170 point total for the Round-Up saddle bronc title. Wright said that victory lap was everything he thought it would be. “It’s just awesome, man,” he said after the ride. “It’s pretty darn cool getting to open up that horse around here with everyone cheering for you.” Wright’s brother Jake, the 2013 Round-Up champion, had set the bar one ride prior to Jesse on Saturday, riding Outlaw Bucker’s Lunatic Party for Saturday’s top score of 86 points to bring his two-ride total to 168. But Jesse said he knew he had a great horse and a good shot to top that. “I just got on that horse a couple weeks ago in Rapid City (South Dakota) and I had missed him out … but that horse is so awesome he just kind of set me up for an awesome score and an awesome ride.” ——— Saddle bronc riding First round payouts — 1. STEER WRESTLING Nick Guy entered the Round-Up with plans to continue hitting the rodeo trail hard until the end of the season as he chases down a berth in the national inals. But then the Wisconsin-born steer wrestler who now resides in Colorado turned in three of the fastest times of the week to place in every round as well as win the aggregate title, and igures he’s due for a break. “I was actually supposed to go to Albuquerque, New Mexico (Sunday) afternoon, but I think I’m going to turn out and head straight to Denver,” he said. “Pasadena, Texas is next weekend, but I told myself if I won this deal I was probably just going to turn out and hang out at home. I haven’t been home for a long time, and we’ve got a new house and I’m ready to enjoy it. … I inally got my own trophy room now, so I can start illing it up. I’m excited.” He turned his steer in 5.4 seconds for the quickest time in Saturday’s short-go, giving him the win with 15.9 seconds on three. “It’d been a long 30 days and I just couldn’t win anything,” he said, “and I just let it be in God’s hands and just, you know, had fun and did what I did. It worked out and I’m glad to be the champ.” ——— Steer wrestling First round payouts — 1. Newt Novich, 5.0 seconds, $4,050; 2. (tie) J.D. BAREBACK Jim Dandy started his bucking career with a saddle on his back, but for the last four years the laxen chestnut gelding has been going au naturale. Tim O’Connell drew the consistent steed to close Saturday’s short-go, and scored 84 points to give him 172 on two and his second championship at the world famous rodeo. “That’s a horse that’s been in the NFR, I mean he’s been around a long time, he used to be a saddle bronc horse,” O’Connell said of the Burch Rodeo bucker after winning his second Round-Up title. “They switched him up to us and I’m sure happy they did. He was fantastic, really started out, and I just put the brakes on him, tried to shorten him up — fantastic horse and I was awfully tickled, awfully blessed.” The Zwingle, Iowa rider shared his irst Round-Up title with Caleb Bennett in 2014. Former Pendleton resi- dent RC Landingham had the highest of the round with 85.5 on Korkow Rodeo’s Onion Ring, who actually bucked There are several ways cowboys can gain an unfair competitive advantage in rodeo, but none that would be considered within the rules. Chase Williams couldn’t help but feel like he’d found a rare exception after winning the tie-down roping title with a 9.4-second run in Saturday’s short-go to give him 28.3 on three head. With most of the calves in the pen looking for freedom by veering left out of the chute on the east end of the arena, Williams’ draw just had to be different. “He was a really good one,” said the Stephenville, Texas roper. “He come to the right, so it’s almost like cheating. Everything goes left or straight, but this makes it so much faster. I was so happy when he came right.” Brad Goodrich of Herm- iston had a 9.5 in the short-go and was second in the aggre- gate with 29-lat on three. ——— Tie-down roping First round payouts — 1.
