Continued from 1A us and not 10 years down the road going ‘Why didn’t we just have a real wedding?’” O’Flaherty said. “(They) made it a lot easier to open my mind to it.” Jones and the rest of the Happy Canyon board tried to keep the wedding a secret as close to the show as possible, but publicity director Corey Neistadt said “keeping it a secret was like trying to keep jets a secret on Round-Up Saturday.” Still, much of the audi- ence, in addition to Brown and O’Flaherty’s guests, were unaware of the wedding until it happened Friday night. After the hick band drew laughs from the crowd, the announcer introduced the soon-to-be-wed couple. “Back in 1915, a couple was married as part of the Happy Canyon show,” he said. “Tonight we are going to honor that tradition 101 years later, and ask you to join us in celebrating the 70s National Summary: Showers and rough seas will brush the Carolina and Texas coasts today. Showers and thunderstorms will extend from the southern Plains to the Great Lakes. Clouds and showers will cool part of the Northwest. According to Brown, their wedding was rehearsed as much as any other part of Happy Canyon, but the one thing they couldn’t simulate was the crowd. “He’s so used to being in the show it was nothing to him,” O’Flaherty said. “But I think at rehearsal it kind of hit me like, ‘OK, those stands are probably going to be full.’ The nerves hit me as I walked out for rehearsal.” But as it turned out, the wedding went smoothly. Joined by three bridesmaids and groomsmen, their oldest daughter and lower girl, Ava, Katy’s father, Tracy, and a full frontier town of actors, the couple were married by Reverend Roger Harwerth of the Pendleton First Presbyte- rian Church. Brown and his father, Jeff, got in touch with the centennial Round-Up directors and were able to wear their tombstone black dress coats for the groom and groomsmen. “It went off without a hitch,” Brown said after- ward. The couple met at Blue Mountain Community College through mutual friends. They’ve been engaged for nearly two years, but when their second daughter Macy was born, O’Flaherty’s efforts to plan a wedding were halted. It was around that time that Rob Burnside, a Happy Canyon director of eight years, and his wife, Ann, approached the couple with an idea to have a Happy Canyon wedding. O’Flaherty was hesitant at 60s wedding of a couple Happy Canyon volunteers.” O’Flaherty had 25 family and friends make the trip from her hometown Bell- ingham, Washington, while Brown’s extended family of 15 came from Jordan Valley. In addition to their wedding Friday, Brown and O’Flaherty plan to have receptions in Pendleton and Bellingham for those who couldn’t attend. As their whirlwind wedding came to a close, a horse-drawn wagon pulled up to the set. O’Flaherty and Brown stepped in, circled the arena a couple times and rode off the set into history, staking claim as only the second ever couple to be wed at Happy Canyon. Most people leave their cars because they don’t want to drink and drive, Clark said. That’s a big reason why Blue Mountain Towing, in partnership with the city, does not charge impound fees leading up to the parade. Clark said they don’t want to punish anyone for being safe. Still, the show must go on. “Everybody wants a parade,” Clark said. The air is chilly while Clark makes his early morning laps, dressed in a black cowboy hat and dark leather jacket. His backup includes Dave Lindell, of Lindell’s Auto Salvage, and Tanner Bellamy, both of whom drive around in separate trucks. They meet up for Cowboy Breakfast at Stillman Park, and igure out how they will divvy up the route. “We don’t really want to tow cars,” Lindell said. “We want the cars to move on their own. They aren’t all going to move on their own, so we move them for free.” Clark decides to focus on a stretch of Southwest Dorion Avenue outside of Mac’s Bar and Grill. He lips on his truck’s lashing yellow lights and meets with a Pendleton police oficer, who directs him to vehicles that need moved. He hums the theme to “Mission: Impossible” as he hops out of his rig. Towing parked cars can be tricky, since there is no one to unlock the vehicles, no one to put them in neutral and no one to steer. But Clark has a few tricks up his sleeve. After hooking up his chains and winch, he hammers plastic “skates” beneath the wheels and squirts a healthy dose of dish soap onto the trailer to make the surface extra slick. Lowering vehicles back onto the ground is even more of a headache. All Clark has is gravity on his side, but he is able to gently slide them down into the lot without a scratch. “I can do surgery with this truck,” he says with a grin. As the parade draws near, Clark must move quickly while also watching out for spectators and carriages in the street. He is careful not to spook the horses, a thought which makes him uneasy. After several hours, Clark is sweating hard and ready for a nap. Yet despite the odd hours and heavy lifting, Clark said he would go insane working a regular desk job. “This is what I’m good at,” he said. “Everything I do is to help people.” By the time Clark tows his ifth and inal vehicle of the morning, a crowd of spectators has lined the street and cheers him on.
