OFF PAGE ONE Wednesday, August 31, 2016 SHERIFF: Lehnert reported buying radio ads SMITH: Has done ‘a lot of wonderful things’ Continued from 1A Continued from 1A a request for comment. John Trumbo said he was done with politics and would not endorse either candidate but added “there’s no doubt in my mind Ryan has all the tools to do the job as sheriff.” Rowan has drawn support from his Hermis- ton-area base, where Amstad Farming Co. gave $1,000 and business owner Paul Burns gave $500. Hermiston farmer Robert Levy and Echo farmer Art Prior also gave $500, as did undersheriff Jim Littleield. Rowan’s campaign reported spending $4,540, and it has all been local, including $1,492 to AJ’s Printed Apparel, Hermiston, and $1,445 to Creative Signs, Pendleton. Lehnert has spent $4,158, with the $2,454 for signs from a company in Austin, Texas. He said his campaign could not afford to buy large signs locally, but he did spend $200 at DG Gifts for election T-shirts and $260 at Master Printers for campaign pamphlets, both Pendleton businesses. Neither candidate has bought print or television advertisements, and only Lehnert reported buying radio ads. Rowan in his irst campaign spent $3,500 for radio ads. Lehnert’s campaign has $1,286 cash on hand. Rowan’s has $1,498, including $16.42 left over from his 2012 campaign. not attached to the comments, but several comments focused on the Eastern Oregon Trade and Event Center. One councilor felt the project was taking up too much of Smith’s time since he joined the board in the fall at the council’s request. Other councilors, however, commented that getting the project successfully completed should be one of Smith’s top priorities. Councilors’ main complaint seemed to be that they learned about major goings-on in the city from the newspaper before they heard it from Smith. They asked that they be informed of “serious police activity” or problems with city services as soon as possible so they are not caught off guard. Overall, councilors praised Smith for his work. One wrote that Smith had done a “great job” in the past two years and another commented that he had done “a lot of wonderful things.” “I appreciate all that you do and want everyone to fully understand the complexity of your schedule,” a third councilor wrote. They asked Smith to prioritize EOTEC, the new senior center, livability projects, imple- menting Hermiston’s new brand, public transit, water, housing development and economic development over the next year.
