SPORTS WEDNESDAY, JULY 27, 2016 1B FOLLOW US ON TWITTER @EOSPORTS Oregon advances to quarterfi nals Colbray Rematch with earns Montana today at 8:30 a.m. national honor HERMISTON Little League Softball East Oregonian SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Team Oregon’s Jaden Samp scored the game-winning run off of an error by Team Idaho’s centerfi elder for the 9-8 victory in the fi rst round of single elimi- nation play at the Little League Softball West Regional on Tuesday afternoon. The victory advances Oregon into the quarter- fi nals of the bracket, where they next face a rematch with Montana, the team that handed Oregon its only loss of the Regional with a 10-4 defeat in pool play. Errors were the name of the game on Tuesday, as the teams combined for a whop- ping 15 miscues — the same amount of hits the teams combined for as well. Oregon’s seven errors led to zero of the eight runs given up by starting pitcher Sauren Garton being counted as earned runs. Oregon scored the game’s fi rst run in the second inning when a single by Ellie Samford coupled with an error by Idaho allowed Ella Chrisman to score for the 1-0 advantage. Idaho responded in the third inning with three runs, two of those coming off of fi elding errors and the third on a wild pitch by Garton to give them the 3-1 lead. Delaney Duchek got Oregon back on the board in their half of the third inning with an RBI See SOFTBALL/2B Hernandez leads M’s to win MLB Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Felix Her- nandez delivers during the fi fth inning of a baseball game against the Pitts- burgh Pirates in Pitts- burgh, Tuesday, July 26, 2016. Puskar King Felix tosses six innings, picks up fi rst win since May 21 By WILL GRAVES Associated Press PITTSBURGH — The strained right calf that sidelined Felix Hernandez for a third of the season is healed. That doesn’t mean the ace is all better, and he knows it. It will take time for the 2010 AL Cy Young Award winner to regain his form, yet there’s a grit that he showed in Seattle’s 7-4 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night that offered proof to Mariners manager Scott Servais that Hernandez is on his way back. Seattle Hernandez picked up his fi rst victory since May 21 despite getting touched for four runs over the fi rst two innings, including a 416-foot homer by pitcher Francisco Liriano. Though Hernandez (5-4) never retired the Pirates in order, he found a way to get through six innings while 7 giving his team- mates enough time to get going at the plate. Pittsburgh “ W e ’ r e certainly looking for crisper, sharper stuff than what he showed early in the game,” Servais said. “To his credit, he hung in there. He gave us a chance, kept it right there, and then our offense was the story.” Kyle Seager’s three hits for Seattle included his 20th home 4 run, and Franklin Gutierrez added his 10th off Liriano (6-10) as the Mariners began a rare trip to Pitts- burgh by overcoming a three-run defi cit and holding on late. The Pirates brought the tying run to the plate in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings but failed to get even one man across the plate. Seattle’s only perfect inning came in the ninth, when Steve Cishek picked up his 24th save. NFL Seahawks extend Carroll through 2019 Seattle 60-36 under Carroll in fi ve seasons By TIM BOOTH Associated Press RENTON, Wash. — The Seattle Seahawks and coach Pete Carroll have agreed on a contract extension, keeping the oldest head coach in the NFL locked up beyond the 2016 season. Team owner Paul Allen tweeted confi rmation of Carroll’s deal on Tuesday. The move with the 64-year-old Carroll came just two days after the team locked up general manager John Schneider to a contract extension. Both Carroll’s and Schneider’s current deals were set to expire after the 2016 season, but the tandem pairing that has brought the Seahawks unrivaled success in their franchise history will be teamed together for another few seasons. Carroll is 60-36 in the regular season since becoming Seattle’s head coach in 2010. He’s taken the Seahawks to the playoffs in fi ve of six seasons, including two Super Bowl appearances and the only title in franchise history. Carroll’s deal was fi rst reported by ESPN and said the extension goes through the 2019 season. Whenever asked during the offseason about his contract situation, Carroll would shrug off the question saying “I’m good.” But the lack of an extension fueled speculation that Carroll may be ready to take on a new role and walk away from being a head coach, no matter how often he indicated he was set on continuing in his position with Seattle. “Everything is great. I’m under contract,” Carroll said at the conclu- sion of minicamp in June. Carroll’s somewhat unconven- See CARROLL/2B AP Photo/Ross D. The $40 million deal was fi rst reported by Yahoo Sports. Harkless confi rmed FACES it on Twitter, posting: “4moe’ ..... God is so good. Thank you (hashtag) ripcity.” The Blazers acquired Harkless in a trade with the Orlando Magic and he averaged 6.3 points and 3.6 rebounds in 78 games overall last season. He fi lled a key role late in Harkless the regular season when Meyers Leonard injured his shoulder, and averaged 12 points and 6.5 rebounds over the fi nal 11 games. Harkless, who played one season at St. Johns, was the 15th overall pick in the 2012 draft by Philadelphia. He was traded to Orlando before the 2012-13 season in the same deal that sent Dwight Howard to the Lakers. “From a competition standpoint, obviously, as a competitor, you’re not gonna say, ‘Yeah, I’ll take the backseat in this. Twitter to live stream MLB, NHL games for free SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Twitter will live stream for free one MLB game and one NHL game per week under a new deal. The agreement announced Monday will allow viewers to watch games nationally that would normally be available only in the two teams’ home markets. Users will not need to be logged into Twitter to see the games. The baseball games will also be available outside the U.S., with some exceptions. The social media network is attempting to move into live sports streaming through “over- the-top” broadcasts, which do not require a cable subscription.
