DAYS GONE BY BEETLE BAILEY GARFIELD BY MORT WALKER BY JIM DAVIS 100 Years Ago From the East Oregonian July 21, 1916 That the bathing suit will soon be the national costume at Helix is indicated by reports reaching here as to the popularity of the swimming pool, just established there. The pool was used for the irst time yesterday and one patron was so enthused he went into the pool six times during the day, according to William Morrison. It is planned to have the formal opening of the Natatorium on Sunday. 50 Years Ago From the East Oregonian July 21, 1966 A 21-gun salute, with each shot from a different gun, is possible for persons unknown who stole 26 pistols recently. They will, however, have to purchase ammunition. They neglected to take the shells kept for the guns. The 26 guns were part of a 100-gun collection of Irvin Rauch, rancher near Lexington. The burglary was discovered when the family returned from an event in Heppner. Hunting riles, with scopes, other riles and pistols were not touched by the burglars. Ammunition, kept in a different location in the home, apparently was not found. All the guns in the collection were usable and in good condition, Rauch said. State police are investigating the theft. 25 Years Ago From the East Oregonian July 21, 1991 A Boise contractor began work this week on Hermiston High School’s new gymnasium, cafeteria and classroom complex. A dozen trees have been leveled and storage sheds and a greenhouse removed along West Highland Avenue to make way for the 60,000-square- foot addition, the school district’s irst major construction project in a dozen years. The addition is to be inished by next summer. Remodeling some parts of the old high school has been scheduled for the summer of 1992.
