Page 2C YOUR EO NEWS East Oregonian Saturday, June 25, 2016 There’s a new sheriff in town Umatilla County Sheriff Terry Rowan and his staff at the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Offi ce are proud and delighted to participate in the “Chief or Sheriff for a Day” program. Clay Thornton of Athena was chosen for the honor. He received a full uniform, badge and name plate and was recognized during a May 31 assembly at Weston Middle School. Clay, 11, was selected by the committee after his grandmother, Jill Stiffl er, nominated him. Clay lives with severe hemophilia and has autism. He is talented, bright, talkative, friendly and he “knows no strangers,” Stiffl er said. Sheriff for a Day is sponsored by partnering agencies, including the Walla Walla Police Department and Walla Walla County Sheriff’s Offi ce. The program invites a local child with phys- ical, mental or medical challenges to be the chief or sheriff for a day. Other partner agencies include the Milton-Freewater Police Department, College Place Police Department, Washington State Patrol, Walla Walla City Fire Department, Walla Walla Fire District 4 and Washington State Penitentiary. Father shines spotlight on athletic son Very seldom does an athlete of this caliber come around. Joshua Dever is that kind of athlete. I could tell that from a young age that he was going to be a special kind of athlete. His ability to grasp and understand any sport has amazed me. His speed and strength is truly an asset and will aid him in his future endeavors. From the time he was 9 years old and starting to play Little League until he was 14 years old, he made the all-star team every year. As a freshmen football player at Hermiston High School, he was Dever selected freshman defensive player of the year. While there he excelled on the baseball team. In the two years that he has been at Umatilla High School, he played varsity football and baseball. In his junior year, he was awarded league second team infi elder. In his senior year, he was awarded league fi rst team kickoff returner and was selected to play in the 1A-3A all-star football game. Unfortunately, due to the time frame, he was unable to play. In baseball, he was awarded league fi rst team infi elder and pitcher. He was recognized as the number 2 all-around player and number 1 senior player in the Eastern Oregon League. He has been selected to play in the 1A-3A baseball all-stars at Linfi eld College on June 11-12. He will be able to attend these games. Not only is Joshua a great athlete but he is also a fi ne young man. He has held a job since he was 15 and working on a ranch He now works for a farming manufacturing company and is planning on attending Oxarc Welding School in the fall. I know that whatever he sets his mind to do, he will do it. As his father, pastor, welding teacher and baseball coach I am very proud of Joshua and look forward to what comes next in his life. David Dever Umatilla Top readers ride away with new bikes A number of third through fi fth grade students in the Hermiston School District are riding into the summer with new bicycles thanks to members of Hermiston Masonic Lodge No. 138 and the Bikes for Books program. The program promotes independent reading throughout the school year. Students were awarded raffl e tickets each trimester for achieving their Accelerated Reader (AR) goal. Bonus tickets were given for doubling or tripling their goal. ANNIVERSARY BIRTHS Marshall and Ann Schilling St. Anthony Hospital, Pendleton Marshall and Ann Schilling are celebrating their 50th wedding anni- versary. The Schillings were married June 25, 1966 at Tri City Baptist Church in Myrtle Creek. They have two children, Kevin (Diona) Schilling of Finley, Wash- ington, and Jody Meighan of Athena. They have three grandchildren, Bailey and Keagen Schilling and Cole Meighan. Marshall and Ann are currently enjoying retire- ment. This handsome sweet boy is not a shy guy, and if you take him to your forever home, watch out you’ll have an award winning charmer in your life. He is a bit of a talker and likes to socialize. Chester was a stray who was in bad shape when he came to us, but he’s all better now and ready to go to a loving home. The tradition of having the top readers at Rocky Heights Elementary School “slime” the principal was carried on by fi rst year principal, Jerad Farley, during an end-of-school event. Designated as “super slimer,” Nathan Booher read the most words with 3,233,795. Top grade level readers also earning sliming duties, including third grader Tad Farley, the principal’s son, who read 1,325,703 words. Other grade level winners were: fi rst grader Taw Braden with 150,281 words; second grader Cate Doherty, 1,391,634; fourth grader Jacob LaBeck, 2,370,921; and fi fth grader Kameron Robison, 3,174,145.
